When the semester first began I felt overwhelmed with the material and at the thought of having to do a head to toe assessment, but really all I needed to do was put in the time and practice. I am extremely proud of the knowledge I gained this semester and also that I am able to conduct a full head to toe assessment. Proving an assessment of a patient is an essential part of being a nurse and I am incredibly grateful for the privilege of having Professor Ringo and Professor May as instructors. I think that the class material is broken down in a way that flows and is manageable for students. I also thought that the lecture final was a unique and fun way to assess our assessment skills and I highly recommend that this assessment method be continued. Overall I had an excellent experience in this course and gained invaluable information that I will use throughout nursing school, and throughout my career as a nurse.

I think the course and lab went really well together. I really liked the idea of working together during the quizzes and also the final in lecture really quizzed us on how much we knew our stuff! Professor Ringo is a great and enthusiastic professor with all of her stories to help us relate the information! I feel very well prepared to do an assessment on a patient at clinical or even family and friends and this class really helped prepare me for the future. I thought it would be impossible to do a full head to toe assessment in 25 minutes, but honestly practice makes "perfect" and I think the lab portion is very well scheduled. I think it was very helpful to have the last 3 weeks to prepare for the final with our partners. I know both Professors really wanted us to do well and cared a lot about our success! Overall this class provided me with skills that I know will only benefit me throughout my nursing career!

This course was very helpful during clinical. I appreciated the hands on learning of lab and thought it was a great way to reinforce the lecture portion of this class. Professor Ringo and Professor May truly cares about their students, which was greatly appreciated. My only struggle was I would receive contradicting information in lab from the two professors, which was confusing in regards to the expectations of the head to toe as well as the health history paper. Overall, I truly enjoyed this course and felt that the format of this class was very conducive to my learning style. Thank you for a wonderful semester.

This class was important to me because I understood early on that the skills learned here would be used throughout our entire career. When the semester started, I felt a little lost...but by the time we ended I felt extremely confident in my assessment skills and felt I would be able to provide good data to a provider in order to make a diagnosis or have enough information to apply an appropriate nursing intervention.

As a 1st semester student, this class has helped me grow tremendously as a nurse. Working in teams throughout the semester in class and in skills lab has taught me great appreciation for both my classmates and instructors.

The only suggestion I have is to use the step-by-step method of instruction in skills lab after a demonstration for each system you are teaching. This ensures that the entire class gets the same, consistent information. We all want to be great nurses, so we are trying very hard to absorb as much as we can from your experiences. I know everyone can provide a point of view that is a little bit different, so if the entire class can glean something helpful...it would make us that much better.

Thank you both for being so caring, motivating, and enthusiastic!

This course allowed me to develop and perfect my nursing assessment skills. I am very confident in my understanding of how to complete, document, and interpret I for my head-to-toe assessment.

I believe this class is very well planned out in how the material is presented. I really enjoyed the use of the Nishikawa videos before lab to gain a better understanding of what to expect for practice. There were a few lab session where the professors demonstrated the assessment for the class which I believe to be extremely beneficial because it allowed the opportunity to ask questions or for clarifications.

Overall I enjoyed this course. I appreciated that a lot of time was devoted to learn each of the systems. It was also extremely helpful to have a few sessions devoted entirely to reviewing the entire assessment.

My suggestions for the course are for the two professors to be on the same page in terms of how they want the assessment done because at times it got confusing studying with the other students. I also think it is important to make sure that each system before breaking up into pairs is done by the professor on someone so that it is more clear how we are expected to do the assessment. It would also be helpful if the professors would watch us practice more closely to ensure the assessment is being done correctly.

That being said I do think the course has made me more confident in my assessment skills. However, it would also be helpful if there was a component where we discussed how to do a focused assessment of patients in the hospital setting. I still want to thank the professors for their help and instruction in learning the essential component of assessing patients.

This class was essential to me understanding how to critical think, study appropriately, and most importantly it gave me the tools to feel confident in my decision to become a nurse. One of the challenges I faced in nursing school was the way questions are worded. Being able to communicate with other students and understand different people's critical thinking processes to answer questions was essential to my growth in the first semester. The lecture content of this course is a lot of information, but professor Ringo is probably one of the most amazing teachers I've seen in action. I highly commend her style. It engages students and makes us really want to learn. With regard to lab, I really felt it was useful. This opened my eyes to the role I am supposed to have when I'm at the clinical site with real patients. Professor May is one of the most sweetest, encouraging and professional teachers I've encountered. She makes a very overwhelming process manageable, and she gives a very safe atmosphere. Overall, I do not have changes for the course. The teachers were great!

The class involved a lot of critical thinking but the slides didn't always match the quiz material. I think it's important to note that the lecture slides were supplemental information to what we would actually be quizzed on. Also, the quiz material came from the small assessment boxes in the book and that's when I realized my attention should be focused there for studying. The quizzes were challenging at times and made you think critically but it was helpful information.

For lab, I really enjoyed learning the head-to-toe assessment but it was a lot to retain (especially since we only had 1 day a week to practice with our partner). I think it was more helpful when the professors guided the entire class, step-by-step, as every one else is paired up and following. I also think it would be helpful to do a guided step-by-step at the beginning of each lab before students practice regardless if it's new material or old; It would help reinforce the material.

I love the energy Professor Ringo has and her ability to engage students. Professor May is also the sweetest soul and she always made me feel confident in my abilities. Thank you both

I think as students we sometimes forget how much work is really required from all the instructors during each semester…so again, thank you both so much for everything.

I really enjoyed this class and I feel like have learned so much already. While the lab portion of this class was my favorite, I still really enjoyed the lecture portion because professor Ringo always had a great story to tell that related to the topic we were covering in class. For me, this really helped the material to stick. Thus, thank you so much professor Ringo for all your stories and for bringing such great energy to every class session. I also think this class, both the lecture and lab portion, were very organized and well planned out, which I truly appreciate since this program moves incredibly fast. With all that being said, I would encourage the instructors to demonstrate the assessments with the class, as a whole, at the start of each class. The instructors did this a few times and I found it to be incredibly helpful.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this class and I feel more prepared when I am on the floors because of this class. So thank you again professor Ringo and May for giving me tools that help guide me while I am at clinicals.

I absolutely loved health assessment! I loved the enthusiasm both Professor Ringo and May had for teaching us. It was very valuable that they took the time to clarify and correct our assessment techniques because our general assessments we spent the whole semester learning and practicing are such an important part of our nursing careers. I love hands-on learning and this class really appealed to that aspect. Because I was able to practice with my partner and be corrected on these different things at midterms and finals, I feel confident in my assessment skills. I am excited to build off from the foundation we built in this class. My cognitive process definitely grew in ways I wasn't anticipating for the first semester, but I'm glad I learned how to evaluate the whole person, while knowing how to focus in on the specific systems that are relevant. These skills definitely helped in clinicals and simulation labs, and I'm really pleased with the class and lab portion.

Thank you, Prof. Ringo, and Prof. May. The two of you have been amazingly kind, selfless and patient with us throughout the semester. I couldn't overstate the importance of this course. It forms the basis of our nursing practice, and it is the first part of the nursing process. After all, one has to know the patient in order to identify their real needs!
I was under no illusions that this would be a challenging course, but through your guidance, I feel that I have gained confidence and skills that will stick with me throughout my nursing career. You’ve gone above and beyond to prepare all of us to be competent in our assessment skills. Thank you once more, and may God bless you abundantly.
Otherwise, there’s hardly anything I would change about the lecture content. The 'final' is such a great idea because it allows your students to employ their learned assessment skills in a near real-world scenario. The lab component is also excellent; especially the use of educationally-focused assessment videos.
Lastly, I am sure I speak for all the other 19 students in saying that our cohort is very fortunate to also have you as our academic adviser.

I think that I learned the most from the lab midterm and final, and gained significant skills with regard to performing an actual physical assessment. I look forward to carrying these skills into the following semesters and putting them into action during our clinical rotations. I also found the "group learning" approach to be beneficial, and it eased some of the stress surrounding quizzes.
