My name is Karina and I live in and am from Houston. My mother is from Michoacan and my father is from Mexico City, but he currently lives in Reynosa. I have previously lived in Reynosa for about a year and also in Jalisco. I am a bartender by trade and love craft cocktails but one of my hobbies is enjoying craft beers from around the world. I like to travel through the U.S. and Mexico. One thing I don't like to do is math homework. Like Professor Villanueva, I am also a first generation college student. I just recently received my GED in 2020 at the age of 28 and immediately enrolled in Lonestar. I am taking this course because it seemed like an interesting way to fulfill one of my requirements, and also so that I can have a better understanding of an important part of my history that is not typically taught in schools. I hope to gain a better understanding of the Mexican American culture.

Hey everyone!,

My name is Christopher Castillo but I go by Chris. I live here in Cypress and am about five minutes from the Cy-Fair location. I am a retail associate at the team store at Minute Maid Park! When I am not studying for classes I am probably gaming, at the gym, or watching movies. I usually hit the gym 4-5 times a week spending a couple hours minimum each time. I have always been athletic except for a three year period where I had lost myself. Luckily I found myself and have stayed committed to working out. When it comes to something unique about me I would say its that I ran the Houston Chevron Marathon when I was 17! Something that I like to do is fishing wether it is salt or fresh water! Something I hate to do would be laundry. I enrolled in this class to finish my associates degree program. I hope to learn more about the Mexican-American history and how things got to where they are today! I look forward to getting to know the rest of you all! Have a great rest of the semester!

I have worked a few seperate jobs over the years, but am excited to move forward on this career path. I took this class because I am from the north of the US and want to learn a lot about Mexican history and culture if I'm going to move closer to Mexico. Moving forward I am excited to work on this class more than most others I've had. I hope everyone is well and good luck this semester!

I have enjoyed my time away from uni because I got to take things slow, travel, and reconnect with my future goals. I plan to return and continue with my degrees.

Hi! My name is Hilda Leal, I am 30 years old. Born and raised in South Texas, the valley for those familiar with the area. I moved to Houston in 2008 and it was a really big culture shock for me. I have two kids, ages 3 and 8 and a dog that's been with me since 2012. I was a stay-at-home mom until recently when both my kids started school. Now I work part time as a property manager at a condominium property. I enjoy going to yoga a couple of times a week and I hate doing laundry - it is never ending. I enrolled in this course because I believe it will open up a new understanding of my culture as a Mexican- American. As fake Abraham told fake Selena in "Selena" we can never be enough Mexican or enough American and I truly identify with that. I hope that from this course I can broaden my perspectives on what it means to be Mexican American.

Greetings everyone, I am Jasmin a freshman in college looking to pursue an associate's degree in paralegal studies. I plan to further my education after completing these two years at the University of Houston. I was born and raised in Houston Texas and continue to live in the area, I am currently 19 years old and will be turning 20 in September. I am a very outgoing person who loves to conversate and enjoy the company of nature. Recently in my free time, I have enjoyed attending the GYM and listening to music. The hobby I most enjoy is going out to target and buying things I don't necessarily need, and trying out new makeup items. I love to play around with colors and do different makeup looks. However, something I don't really seem to enjoy as much is reading. It has to be a book super interesting to keep me motivated to continue reading, but I am working on reading more and discovering new books. The reason I enrolled in this course is most important because it seemed like an interesting class to take and learn from since high school doesn't seem to provide me with this knowledge. Also as a Hispanic woman with Mexican roots, I am eager to learn more about the place my parents were born at. From this course, I am hoping to learn more about Mexican American culture. I am also looking to be able to expand my knowledge of the history of Mexican Americans.

My name is Marina Franco I am the mother to 5 young ladies and grandmother to 3 babies. I have been with my partner although not married but together for 32 years. I reside in Houston and was born and raised here. I am me because I am a very firm believer in being true to yourself. I have always been a very giving person, so I have worked for non-profits my whole career. I work in the Montrose area so the population I serve is mostly the gay community. Something unique about me and my family is that we embrace my friends from the LGBTQIA+ community in our home as many are not accepted in their families. My parents are second parents to them as my parents raised us to love and welcome everyone. I think that is unique because in my culture (mexican-american) many people don't accept it.I enrolled in this course to learn more about my culture. I hope to learn so much that I can share and pass on to my daughters. I am excited about anything dealing with my culture as it is not always celebrated or given credit for our contributions to our history.

I don't hate anything, but something I dislike is being inside. I love to drive around and go visit new restaurants and places or just take in the scenery.

Hello! My name is Kenneth Soc, I was born and raised in Houston, Texas. I am currently in the progress of completing my associate's degree in Construction management, then hope to transfer to Texas A&M University to complete and receive my bachelor's. I am currently working as a Realtor Part-time and hopefully convert into full-time later in the future. Something that I absolutely love is powerlifting and spending time with my family, something I don't like and never will, is dieting! I personally believe what makes me unique is my outlook on life, I'm very optimistic about things despite the circumstances, whether they are good or bad I know everything happens for a reason, and this too shall pass. I enrolled in this course because I grew up mainly around Mexican culture and hope to learn something new about the culture that shaped me into who I am today, I hope to get out more knowledge than what I came in with about the culture and its history.

Hi everyone! My name is Miriam Acosta and I live in Houston, TX with my husband and three kids (two of which are music majors at LSC Kingwood). I am in the process of completing my associate's degree and then plan to transfer to the University of Houston to obtain my bachelor's degree. I purposely did not list my major as I am having second thoughts about being an Accountant, my original plan, and now want to focus on translating or learning new languages. I am not sure what makes me, me. I love singing praises to God. I dislike that I always procrastinate, I have to keep working on that. I enrolled in this course to learn more about my heritage. My parents are both from Michoacán, Mexico. Hope everyone has a great semester!

Hi, my name is Jose and I'm happy to be a part of this class! I'm 21 years old and I currently live in Spring but I'm hopefully moving to Magnolia soon if everything goes well in the home buying process. I love driving and working with my cars and sharing these experiences with people around me. Some of the things that make me...me are that I love working with cars and finding fun, spontaneous things to do.
I enrolled in this course to get a better understanding of my roots. My mom and her side of the family are from Guanajuato, Mexico and my father is from El Salvador. I am the first generation born in the US. Thank you and I'm excited to learn more and get to know everybody!

Hello my name is Emma Garcia, I live in Katy TX, and I am majoring in Biology. I hope to go on and study medicine at UT. I work full time at a home made bath and body store where we make all the products by hand with all natural ingredients. I love to read and journal in my free time as well as going to the gym. I hate that I procrastinate so much because I know I could accomplish a lot more with the free time I have. I enrolled in this class because in school they never really went in depth about about the history and it really interests me, but also to learn more about my culture and heritage. I hope to learn more about all the important history and move forward knowing more about the incredible culture.
