The Great Migration is known as the nation’s largest movement of African Americans from the rural south to cities in the west, midwest, and urban north. The main reason for their migration was their dreams of freedom and hopes of seeking equality, jobs (meatpacking companies, servants of the wealthy, Pennsylvania Railroad expansion, etc.), and better educational opportunities. They were also moving to the west to take advantage of a labor shortage in the industrial cities. Between 1916-1930 about 1.6 million people moved away from the south mostly to the cities in the northeast, as well as Chicago and Detroit. All together from 1916-1970, around 6 million people migrated.

Proximity didn’t explain all the patterns. For example Georgia and South Carolina are similar distances from Cleveland, Ohio, but a migrant from Georgia was three times more likely to go to Cleveland than one from South Carolina. This can be explained by chain migration.
