Inner thoughts

"I Pretended to follow the rules. I kept things to myself, like my interest in poetry and philosophy. I pretended other things too" Pg 3

Cristian's inner thoughts demonstrate how counterfeit he actually is. He puts on a face to who he really is because he knows that he's not allowed to be anything but what the government wants. This is important because his government is communist, and he is a fraud, illegal, and has broken many laws from what he says. If he is pretending, he knows that others are pretending too, and this makes him a suspicious and a conscious person about his situations. He is a guarded person and i doubt that he will let it down easily. As dubious as he is about his choice, he will continue to pretend, no matter what road it goes down.

Place and Atmosphere

When Cristian is in his home, he is noticeably more cautious, and he is bummed by his living space. He is "Crouched in a closet"(PG27) for his room. He describes the activities around him such as "one sick yet feisty grandfather on an illegal sofa in the kitchen- one teen camped out in a closet" (Pg 27). It gives his home a little bit of warmth, and something that might not be too bad, because its familiar, but he knows he wishes for it to be better. It gives the feeling of disappointment and a loss of hope for where they are because they know nothing will change. The family is always tense, and even when they aren't, they have to cover the phone to make sure they aren't being listened too. That constant familiar sickness that hangs in the air is seen, even as he is away in his closet, and even as he hangs out with Liliana in the movie room and just walking with her, the air is still suffocating them all because of their government.

Action and reaction

When Cristian found out that Luca had been the one to inform on him, he was more than upset.

"I had always been myself with Luca. Until now. Now i hated him for informing on me, not only because it resulted in me being forced to spy for the Secu, but also because it ended the first true friendship i had." Pg 60.

This action had changed a bit of his personality, as he saw a side of someone he trusted, and had to lose that person, and he wasn't only mad, but sorrowful to lose him. This caused Cristian to have a reaction of being cautious of everyone, even the girl he now has a crush on. He takes his anger out in a punch, which says that his emotions take a bit more control when they are big. He was thinking about it for a while, and this is something that will affect how he makes friends in the future, as he won't trust as easily as he did before he was betrayed.

External conflict; Character vs fate

Cristian is seen having a hard time understanding his own situation compared to others, and this is some of the trouble that is seen to start appearing.

"'They don't even need weapons to control us. Our own fear is more than enough. You see Crtisti, this is how it feels, being an animal in a trap.' It was awful. And I was so tired of awful." (Pg 99) His bunu, or grandfather, is exclaiming how the government has a hold on them, with just their fears to strangle them alive. Cristian is so clearly tired of it, and this is important because this plays in the plot and rising action. Who is he, to not get tired of being manipulated and controlled even by the air he breathes? He was being watched, hence, he had to become a watcher, a spy, an infiltrator in his own home and to a now possible friend. He sees the release of Hungary and starts to become upset that this is his life. He is starting to revolt, slowly, even if it is just thoughts, and this is where his struggles roll.

Inner Thoughts

PG 64, "I did as I was told. I took a breath and reviewed my plan. I would be calm. I would speak sparingly. I would be in control." This is the thoughts of Cristian. This little scene shows how Cristian is being very cautious with the agent so he doesn't get caught being a double spy, not being 100 percent with his investigation of the target, and so he doesn't be seen as nervous which could lead him to being caught as a spy as well. The evidence sits well with his cautious characteristics because it shows him trying to have a stoic attitude wit the agent and also shows how he wants to give as little information as possible in the situation so he can always have the upper hand against the agent and the regime.

She pulled me closer and pressed against me, placing the side of her face on my chest. I closed my eyes, held onto the moment-and for once, thanked the heavens for darkness of communism."

This is actions because it shows the desires of Cristian by saying how he wrapped his arms around the girl that he really wanted to be close to and love on in that set period of time. It also is action because it shows the desires of the girl by portraying her pulling Cristian towards her and pressing her face against his chest for that set period of time as well. It is inner thoughts because at the end of the evidence, it tells us the thoughts Cristian is thinking which is him thanking the "heavens" for placing him in the communist era of Romania with the girl he really wanted to be around during this period.

Be angry with her.

Thats Garbage, you're in love with her." (Pg 141). Liliana had gotten angry with him because her stuff had been exposed and she accused him, because he was the only one she was with. He was upset even though all he wanted was to be with her. His desire and want for her is strong, but the feel of duty to be mad at her is just as strong.

"Instead of being happy to see her, i was angry. My reaction made no sense." (Pg159). He has very conflicting feelings about her, but he knows he wants to love her and forgive her more than ever, but he hates that she wrongfully accused him, and he wanted to be seen for more than someone who would do that. He feels as if he must be angry. This is important because they are the main characters, and Liliana has such a big impact on him.

He swung his arms, casually looking about, speaking louder than most Romanians would. I envied him, the courage to be himself. In public."

This is place because Cristian clearly noted that that they was walking through a named plaza which show sthem entering and exiting through that area that was brought up in this little quote. The atmosphere or the feelings that is being portrayed by Cristian is as stated, " envy". Cristian is portraying envy because he isn't being watched by the communistic country of Romania. He is also envious because Dan can be himself without being punished for going against the regime.

"I'm going to give my notebook to the U.S. diplomat. How shall I describe what they did to you? Dan didn't put the dollar in our stamp album. So who did?" And of course, I shared jokes.

Caustic/critical Diction:

"'Bunu knew exactly what you were doing.' Cici took a step back. - He knew, Cici, and you know what he said? That it was so painful. That we had a rat in our very own apartment. You got us into this and now Bunu's dead anyway. Did your agent boyfriend kill him? Or was it the agent who lives in our building? Are you seeing him too?' Then the realization hit me. 'You asked Alex out, you informed on his family.- It was you. Everything, its all been you. You killed Bunu. You killed my relationship with liliana. You've killed all my plans. You've killed - me." (Pg 213)

This gives the feeling of caustic by the way he puts Cici down, and how he just keeps insulting her. It also gives the tone of critical, because all he can find is how Cici messed up. All of her mistakes and misjudgement has caused his downfall, with friends, his girlfriend, and even his own grandpa, leading him to be a spy on what was his only friend at the time, the foreign american boy. These merge together as he puts his sister down in disbelief of all of what she has done to their family. This is important, because for as long as he had the dollar bill, downfall followed, and he only had wonder who it was who was informing on him. The betrayal he faces puts all of the emotion in chaotic frenzy of sadness and anger.

We all felt it. We saw it in one another's eyes. It was freedom - and it was glorious. We continued for hours. Darkness fell. The crowds increased. Information circulated." (Pgs 120 & 121)

The quick short sentences give the tone of excitement and dignified. They aren't in any order, but it gives a feeling of mutual respect with a glimmer of hope lying underneath. They haven't ever held hope high like this, and never felt so confident in who they were. The importance that is shown through these quick breif lines gives their freedom and revolt, power, but not any power, power in unity that needed a nation to fight for it. The ernest stir that this has given not just Cristian, is more powerful than they've ever been to reclaim as they can with all they can. (Emotion snuffed, and individuality pushed down for lives, generations, and for more than they know, and they are finally taking back the human rights they deserve.)

It shows Crushed Diction by the selection of words that was used such as "Sorrow" and "Anger". These words are very similar to crushed because they are all words meaning defeated, saddened, or heartstrucked. I know because he says, " even if it worms its way out, there will be no relief." This proves that he is crushed emotionally and saddened by the passing of his grandfather or Bunu. The relationship between this and my character is that my character is portraying this diction. It establishes overwhelmed because his head starts racing from his thoughts on how his sister is a spy and has been ratting everyone out to the agent and he believes she is no longer trustworthy since she has been throwing her family under the bus. The author portrays the use of stomped emotions by showing how Cristian is confused why Cici is ratting on everyone she is helping to the regime and he is confused how Cici is putting up an innocent act infront of everyone while underneath she is snaking them in the back but giving out crucial information to the agent/regime.

Symbolism;

"'You infuriate me, old man! I was saving those to get money for you.' - 'Bunu traded the Kents to have the radio repaired.' 'Those cigarettes didn't belong to you.' What belongs to us, truly, Mioara? Everything belongs to the party my dear." (Pgs 116 & 117)

The kents are a type of currency, and mean as much to them as a one dollar bill does to us. The importance of this moment, is that Cristian's Grandfather had traded all they had to get a little bit of information, when he was in dire need of something to help him, but he'd rather spend it on knowing what will happen to the world.

"I had to agree with Bunu. I'd rather be kentless but have the radio." (Pg 117)

Something as valuable as a currency, traded in can only mean that the information they received was much more valuable. Kents are a symbol of trade, and for somethings uncommon, and not something of an everyday craft. As important as they are, they show up several times, being proven useful, but when Cristian turns down an offer of kents for helping his neighbor, it demonstrates that it is nothing more than a favor, and that the kents shouldn't be needed. The importance of these yet again, is to ask for something more than unordinary, and the fact that his grandpa used it on the radio, shows that that information wasn't nothing.

(Pg 229)

When you know who you are, and you aren't given a chance to show yourself, you pity yourself, grieving what you never had, the identity of yourself.

The theme is revealed through the story by showing how this small part of the poem shows how suppressed not only the boy is, but his country and home. It demonstrates his hope, and what he wanted to have and to be, and how continuing through the book its seen how destructive his environment is.
