Deluding oneself by saying that the mental outlooks of all the people in the world are basically the same, that differences do not matter or are mere conventions, only creates an added difficulty. While certain universal human characteristics do exist, there still are significant basic differences in values, behaviour and language, even when English is used as a lingua franca.
Knowing how to cope with cultural differences can really make a difference. Before an international negotiation, thorough preparation is needed in order to understand what foreign people mean by what they say and do, and what reactions should be expected from them. Raising our cultural awareness will give us the basic tools to manage differences in behavioural and communication styles.
