Throughout many times in history, Morocco has tried to claim the neighboring Western Sahara territory as part of its own country. The residents of Western Sahara want independence however, so groups like the Polisario Front were formed by the locals to push back against Morocco claiming ownership over their land. Morocco and the Polisario Front did have a thirty year ceasefire, but it ended recently in 2020 at the request of the Sahrawi Republic (The Polisario Front's government).

Morocco is a parliamentary constitutional monarchy. The king or the chief of state is currently Mohammad VI, while the prime minister or head of government is currently Aziz Akhannouch. The king inherits the throne, but since legislative elections are held to decide representatives and councillors for parliament, whichever party holds the largest portion of parliament will have a candidate appointed to prime minister by the king. The government has three branches: the judicial branch, the executive branch, and the legislative branch.

Corruption and other political issues in Morocco have led to unemployment and poverty rates rising across the country. 22.2% of Moroccan people between the ages of 15 to 24 are unemployed, and poverty and illiteracy rates have risen too. The government has tried to do numerous social and economic reforms to combat these issues, with one lowering the poverty rate in Morocco from 8.9% in 2007 to 4.2% in 2014.
