The Mona Lisa is a portrait painting by the artist Leonardo Da Vinci. It has been considered a masterpiece of the Renaissance. It has been described as one of the most famous artworks. In the painting, Mona Lisa is eyebrow less. Many historians believe the painting is a portrait of Madam Lisa Giocondo, wife of a wealthy Florentine. Some Historians believe that it must be a portrait of Leonardo Da Vinci’s mother, Caterina, and the mysterious smile seems as a memory of Caterina’s smile .Some believe it is Leonardo Da Vinci’s self portrait because of the resemblance in the sitter’s and the artist’s facial features and some people added that in Leonardo may have made his self portrait as a lady to disguise himself from the viewer to make the painting as a riddle also. Mona Lisa has no clearly visible eyebrows or eyelashes, although Vasari describes the eyebrows in detail. In 2007, French engineer Pascal Cotte announced that his ultra-high resolution scans of the painting provide evidence that Mona Lisa was originally painted with eyelashes and eyebrows, but that these had gradually disappeared over time, perhaps as a result of overcleaning. Cotte discovered the painting had been reworked several times, with changes made to the size of the Mona Lisa's face and the direction of her gaze. He also found that in one layer the sitter was depicted wearing numerous hairpins and a headdress adorned with pearls which was later scrubbed out and overpainted.

The Mona Lisa is a a portrait of the wife of a Florentine merchant, and so her gaze would have been meant for her husband. However, the painting was never delivered to its patron for some reason and Leonardo kept it with him when he went to work for Francis I, the King of France. This is one of the many theories about the Mona Lisa.

I feel like there is a mysterious reason to Mona Lisa’s smile. The smile seems to have a deeper meaning. I feel it’s a bit calming of the assuring smile and a bit creepy the way it looks at us. It’s a bit sad because she is sitting in a sad place. But I also feel that she is acting as the light for the sad painting.
