         <description><![CDATA[<div>I chose the book at The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis because it gives the reader an insight on the struggles in friendship, loyalty, family, and survival. This book also allows for students to understand the struggles of being a refugee living in Pakistan.&nbsp;<br><br>In order to understand the Taliban, students will read the struggles of the main character in this historical fiction novel. This novel also emphasizes the struggles that Parvana (the main character) faces with being a woman in Afghanistan with not bring able to walk on the street, forced to cover her whole body, and living in the constant fear of getting raped by men.&nbsp; &nbsp;<br><br>By reading this historical fiction novel, students will gain a better understanding of the war in Afghanistan. Students will be able to implement their understanding of the novel by participating in activities like determining the story elements in the book, having a thoughtful discussion, and&nbsp;<br><br>The book starts off with a girl named Parvana sitting on a blanket with her face covered reading a letter from her father. Parvana is in 6th grade living with her sister Nooria who is in high school and her mother as well as 2 other family members. All women in Kabul are forbidden to get an education and getting a job. Parvana's father has lost his leg in war and Parvana is the only family member that really knows how to care for the father. Parvana has been running from bombs all her life due to the war and she goes through many struggles to make sure that her family has what they need to survive no matter the risks that she has to take. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Malala is a Nobel Peace Prize winner that recommends The Breadwinner to students all around the world. Malala was a teenager living in Pakistan under the Taliban rule. Malala was shot by a soldier one day coming home from school. The author Deborah Ellis decided to turn Malala's story into a book to keep her legacy alive.&nbsp;<br>For this activity, students will challenge their thinking by reading the article either alone or with a partner and write a letter to Malala. Students will explain in their letter what they admire about her and how she has inspired them.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Aneta, I really enjoyed you history lesson on the Taliban as well. I really like that you had them create anchor charts which can be displayed through the class through the book  unit. I also enjoyed the Hinge piece on art being able to analyze art is very important, and help them really think more critically.</div>]]></description>
