Frederick Douglass uses ethos in this quote by using his credibility as an ex-slave to show how lives of other slaves were. He does this by showing the audience that he was once in this position and that he died before knowing his age. This example Douglass used is a compelling way to connect with the audience and to explain to the audience just how bad the slaves had it. He also says that some of the other slaves have it as bad as he did at the time of him being a slave.

Frederick Douglass gives a depressing example of all of the times he has seen his mother throughout his entire life which was a few times. He also uses a very emotional way to explain how even during the times that he saw his mother was only during the night. This example creates an emotional tone for this part of the book by exemplifying to the audience how lonely of person Douglass was. The slaves were taken and separated from their families, so everybody was busy with work instead of having their families backs which proved to be another horrific and sad thing the plantation owners did. Douglass also explains that even if his mother died, he would feel that he would handle it like a stranger's death.

When Douglass uses this incredible example of how the slaves showed that they were sad or happy, he felt utterly disgusted with the way they were doing this. He thought that the slaves were making themselves look bad and helpless by doing the catchy singing which the slaves used a form of communication. This example that Douglass uses helps exemplify logos by showing how the slaves used logic to back up his claims and assertions. Douglass himself did not like the way the slaves dehumanized themselves by crying out helplessly in songs that the slaves sang because he felt that they were stronger than that. This example is a magnificent way that exemplifies the use of the technique of logos.
