Postcolonial Theory Summary

Postcolonial theory is a tool that can help identify, analyze and organize events not just through literature texts, but can also be applied to real world scenarios. It opened my eyes to a whole new concept of themes; identity, race, class, otherness, suppression, oppression, language, civilized/uncivilized and globalized. This theory helped me cleverly dissect events, characters and the body of each literature, arranging them in each theme, ultimately making it easier to interpret the importance of each story. In addition, this concept helped me easily identify these attributes in my everyday life. As common as going to the grocery store, seeing an aisle of products labeled, "Hispanic Spices", an example of race, going to a local retail store where, African American teens were followed in the cosmetic section, displaying otherness, and people getting in front of my 12 year old daughter in line at a food mart, because she's a kid, relates to class. I also feel that it helped me gain insights into the colonial ages. When the postcolonial theory was introduced to me, I was able to identify how even at a different time in our history, the issues that our historians faced is still an issue in the real world. The difference was simply the year, not the issue. Every day we are faced with these colorful attributes and it's up to everyone of us to make a difference. Our heritage, background, upbringing and life experiences make us who we are today, our history is the foundation and without it, we may not be whole.

Communication At Your Tips

It's amazing how much we have evolved on how we get our news today! The web-search engine giant, Google, was started in 1998. This is the most popular search engine used to help people capture; real time information, research, images, events, etc. Your inquiry is fulfilled as quick as you hit the search key. We used to wait for our Saturday and Sunday newspaper delivery to get weekly information on local and national news. We relied on paper phonebooks to get business phone numbers and addresses. Now this enhance feature of search gets us what we need and as soon as we need it in real time. The postcolonial theory that resonated most with me during my research of Google search engine, is otherness. We all want to move with the times we are in and not stay behind. If its faster and saves me time, why not jump on the train and go with the flow. Even our older generation is using google maps and google functionality to help them get information instead of calling 311 for city information. Change keeps us going, so embrace it!

Cell Phones in the 21st Century

In order to keep up with the times we are in, cell phones have become the norm. It's a way we stay connected with others. Which has also become a tool that is more used and favored than computers. The theme that is most presented is otherness, because people follow trends to fit in and adapt to the changes. We don't want to standout, or not belong. It's important to relate to what the majority are experiencing, so we adapt. The look and feel of cell phones has evolved, from big, wide with a long antenna, to an object that fits in your back pocket, more accessible to carry and hold. Before cell phones, we had beepers, a small electronic device that would beep and display your number for reaching out to someone. Even house phones, have become a historical tool that rarely you will find in a home. It's certainly no longer common. A cell phone has become a long distance leash that keeps you connected with anyone and everyone important to you. My teenagers, seem to think their cell phone is a necessity like having food and water. They watch tv, get news, research, communicate, play games, and take photos using one device, a cell phone. These devices have consumed our children of tomorrow, should we be worried?

My Reflection on Identity

The Postcolonial theme that resonated the most with me was identity. The reason I chose identity was because I struggled with identity, my whole life. From the day I was born, sharing my love, being Twin A. It was always us three, my older sister who was 11 months apart and my twin, 5 minutes younger than I. Mom treated us like triplets. Everywhere we went I was not only a twin but seen as a triplet; dressed alike, same teacher, class and friends. Now my twin and I would sit in a class together until 4th grade. Even though we were two, but always seen as one in everyone's eyes, especially the teachers. As I became a teenager, we went to different high schools, which was the beginning of me finding my identity. I was finally free! I never looked back, did well in school, had my own friends, joined the school band making high school my own. As adults, we always been close, best friends even now, but had to go through a separation to be true to ourselves. I worked on my goals and stayed focus, just as she did. Even as twins, everyone has their own identity, it's like a fingerprint, everyone is unique. You have to know who you are and what you want to represent. I had to focus on what's important to me and what legacy do I want to leave. All these things shaped me into the strong women I am today. I am a determined and focused woman who will achieve and succeed!
