This post came to mind quite easily. I knew exactly what my ohhh... moment was. The first couple weeks of class we talked about the importance of literacy and why it is needed in the classroom. For one, I had no idea how to implement literacy inside a history class, except to demand lengthy books. Don't get me wrong, reading books are very knowledgeable, but for students to get their necessary fix of literacy through a multiple books is somewhat cruel. As a current student and planning to further my career as a student, being required to read a 300 page book in one night is not my idea of education. This may work at the college level, but I am quite sure that this will not work at the high school and middle school level.
This led to me to believe that I was essentially doomed to create a literacy rich classroom. But after comprehending what a text and literacy really means, I came to a conclusion that I could implement all sorts of literacy in my classroom. As a future history teacher I plan on having the majority of the content based on primary and secondary sources. Many sources consist of letters, articles, and images. While thinking about the ability to use images as primary sources my ohhh... moment came alive. There is an old saying, "a picture tells a thousand words." That is exactly what I need. Pictures, symbols, movies, political cartoons, are all sources that promote a text and literacy rich environment.
No longer I am discouraged about the thought of a classroom with an absence of literacy. In reality history has many literacy and text practices to choose from.
