He doesn't like to write poetry and is writing to his teacher in a journal like way. He and his class are reading poems and Jack tries to make heads or tails of it but he fails. He writes to his teacher about it and then, his teacher suggests to write a poem about his pet but Jack does't have a pet. His teacher tells him to write a poem about a dog he had and when he and his class read a poem about a dog, he makes a connection with the dog in the poem and his old dog. The book Love That Dog is about Jack talking about poems from the  class and poems he read. Also it talks about Jack's yellow dog ,and  as the story goes on it talks more and more about the yellow dog they got back from the Animal Protection Shelter. Whenever Jack makes a new poem he always asks   the teacher to NEVER put his name on the board with other summaries.
