Working abroad is the dream of many people in Indonesia. Unfortunately, many Indonesians leave their home country to work abroad, but due to a lack of knowledge, some of them are tricked into accepting fake job offers with fake visas and the lure of high salaries.

As I read today on the news from the BBC, several young Indonesian executives were tricked by brokers who offered them to work in England picking fruit;
They owe millions of rupiah to the bank for departure fees, but it turns out that the promised salary is so far from adequate. then those poor workers who have no money to go home and who are already in heavy debt in Indonesia are finally forced to choose the path of applying for asylum in the UK in order to cover the agent fee debt and return the capital used.

Unfortunately, they apply for asylum without adequate knowledge of the asylum process or the British-Rwandan "horror plan."

I think Indonesia is currently facing a literacy emergency about conflict and refugee issues. Most Indonesians don't care about the refugee issue yet.

For me, it is really important that everyone should have basic knowledge about sociology, law, and refugee issues. For me, these three things are basic logical knowledge so that, we won't easily fooled by fake offers.

English link of the news are also available 😊

1. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/dec/02/hundreds-of-indonesian-fruit-pickers-in-uk-seek-diplomatic-help
2.
https://www.bbc.com/news/explainers-61782866.amp
