Stage 1: Trust vs Mistrust

Erikson's first stage, Trust vs. Mistrust is identified as the stage for age 0-1 years old and is determined by whether the basic needs of the child are met and the child receives love and affection. In this stage, it is stated on table 1.5.2 in the LibreTexts textbook lesson 1.5 that "an infant must have their basic needs met in a consistent way in order to feel that the world is a trustworthy place (Paris et al. 1.5 Developmental Theories)". I resolved this crisis with trust. I was provided everything I needed to survive consistently and had a great amount of love and affection.

Erikson's second stage is autonomy vs. shame/doubt. This stage depends on if the child is allowed the opportunity to do things on their own without being hurried along or told they can't do it right. In the textbook LibreTexts, lesson 1.5 Developmental Theories, it is stated that "Mobile toddlers have newfound freedom they like to exercise and by being allowed to do so, they learn some basic independence (Paris et al. 1.5 Developmental Theories)". I resolved this crisis with autonomy. I gained this autonomy by being allowed to explore without being hovered over by my parents. I was potty trained quickly because I was not scolded for accidents and was praised for my interest in doing so.

Stage 3: Initiative vs Guilt

Erikson's third stage of development is Initiative vs Guilt. In this stage initiative is achieved when the child is allowed the opportunity to do things themselves. Guilt is achieved when the child is punished or scolded for actions. According to the Spring Ridge Academy "When children experience excessive guilt or harsh punishment relating to initiating action, they may be reluctant to initiate actions in the future (Spring Ridge Academy, 2023)". I resolved this conflict with guilt because at the age of 3 I witnessed my parents in a physical fight because my dad was upset with my mom. That then lead me to fear upsetting my dad and lead to anxiety that still continues on.

Erikson's forth stage of development is industry vs. inferiority. In this stage children begin to build confidence and if they are put down or told they can't do things right then that could lead to inferiority. In the textbook LibreTexts, lesson 1.5 Developmental Theories, it is stated that "School aged children focus on accomplishments and begin making comparisons between themselves and their classmates (Paris et al. 1.5 Developmental Theories)". I resolved this conflict with industry. I gained confidence as I went through school because I succeed in school and was placed in all the higher classes throughout school.

Erikson's fifth stage of development is identity vs. confusion. This stage is where adolescents learn who they are. This stage can be impacted negatively if the adolescent has low confidence in self, has no sense of who they are or who they want to be, or if someone has negatively shot down their dreams, telling them that they are unlikely or not good enough. In LibreTexts, lesson 1.5 Developmental Theories, it is stated that' teenagers are trying to gain a sense of identity as they experiment with various roles, beliefs, and ideas (Paris et al. 1.5 Developmental Theories)". I resolved this conflict with identity because I was confident in who I was and who I wanted to be. I knew that I wanted to go to college to work with children in some way.

Erikson's sixth stage of development is intimacy vs. isolation. This stage is where young adults begin finding love, becoming intimate and building greater relationships to those close to them. It is stated in the textbook LibreTexts, lesson 1.5 Developmental Theories, that "in our 20s and 30s we are making some of our first long-term commitments in intimate relationships (Paris et al. 1.5 Developmental Theories)". I resolved this conflict in intimacy. I found my first love and became intimate in this relationship, leading me to parenthood at age 20.

Erikson's seventh stage of development is generativity vs. stagnation. This stage is where you are generally working in a career and building a family. On the website SimplyPsychology it is stated that in this stage "you contribute to society and be a part of a family (Saul Mcleod, 2023)". Even though I am not in the age group for this stage, I am considered to be in this stage as I have a family on my own now and am working towards a career to help children succeed.

The final stage of Erikson's development is integrity vs. despair. In this stage, one tends to reflect back on their life and they either are happy and content with their life or they have regret for things in their life. In the textbook LibreTexts, lesson 1.5 Developmental Theories, it is stated that in this stage "we look back on our lives and hope to like what we see-that we have lived well and have a sense of integrity because we lived according to our beliefs (Paris et al. 1.5 Developmental Theories)". Although I am not in this stage, I hope to end this stage with integrity. I hope to know that I was the best person I could have been to my loved ones and that I accomplished my dreams that I wanted to.
