Smith accompanied Captain Christopher Newport and dozens of other men on a trip up the river for exploration and it was where they met the native Powhatan Indians and dined with them(Separate from the ones that capture him in the future). Months later on a hunting expedition, Smith was captured by Indian warriors and taken to a local chief named something I will not try to pronounce or spell. The Indians would let him live if he proved himself to be important and Smith, noticing that the Indians saw anything incomprehensible to them as supernatural, he took out a compass to show them. He jumped from village to village for supplies to the Indians after he was given the same supplies the Indians asked for and gave to them. This happened until he arrived at Wero(Shortened because I will not write that entire name), where the chief questioned his purpose here, letting him feast, then prepared to bash his brain in between two stones.

This was where he met Pocahontas, who saved him from death. He was set free and went back to leading the colony again, but when he did, he was a bit late and witnessed only 38 of the original 104 still alive, but either sick or malnourished while arguing. Supply ships arrived by January of 1608 but Smith still ended up going on many expeditions for the next year and a half for food. He also went on another few expeditions to the Chesapeake bay area, where he would almost die for a third time by a stingray.He became president of the council in Fall of the same year and enforced his famous rule “Thou who shall not work, shall not eat.”

He re-ordered the colonists to turn their attention from gold to shelter and crops. He trained the colonists in military skills and did trading with the Indians. He was a great leader that guided the colony into success. His luck would shortly end after being badly injured by a gunpowder explosion in 1609, forcing him to return to England but he continued to promote America and then came back in 1614, traveling to Maine and Massachusetts bay areas(Named New England at the time). When he learned of Pocahontas’ arrival in 1616, he sent a letter to Queen Anne to tell her about the friendly ties he made with the Indians and the importance of this specific indian. Smith spent the rest of his days writing books about America until his death at 51 years old in 1631.
