The teacher was very empathic. She reassured the mother that she will take care of Sami, and took time to listen to her explaining about Sami's medication. As an educator I believe that these situations require emapthy, clear communication and reassurance. Throughout my career I had occasions were parents were worried and had a lot of uncertainties. The following steps are approaches I adopted:
1. I listened actively to their concerns without interrupting them, asking them what their worries are and how I can help.
2. Showing empathy and understanding. Parent's concerns about their children's well-being should be prioritize and validated.
3. Open communication. I maintained an open and transparent communication sharing relevant information about the child, safety measures and how I planned to support the child.
4. Reassurance and collaboration. I firmly believe that is vital to offer the parent's reasurrance that their child will be fine and emphasising my cmmitment to the child's well-being.

From her facial expression and behavior, it is clear that Sami's mother is upset and would prefer to stay. Sami's teacher saw and heard mother, showed empathy and said that she will take care of Sami and that they have all the necessary medicines and consent. From my experience, when talking with worried parents, it helps to recognize and validate their feelings and ask what they expect from me or how I can help them in a specific situation.

From the proximity of the mother to Sami and from the expression of the face, it is clear that the lady is very worried about leaving Sami in the group of his companions. When the teacher approaches, mom makes sure that the accompanying teachers have everything we need to take care of Sami. The teacher has a calm and reassuring face. I have already had experience of parents of students with behavioral disorders trying to be reassured before leaving their children. The teacher must make the parent feel that he is aware of the situation, not to underestimate the risk, to have the situation under control as much as possible. Also I always gave my phone number to allow the parent to keep in touch for any request or, simply, to know that everything is fine.

In that way the teacher showed empathy, understanding. I am also a form teacher and we go on a school trip every year. Some time ago I had to remind a student to take his medicine.

It was very evident that Sam's mother was concerned and anxious to let him go. She wanted to reassure the child and didn't want to leave unless he asks her to do so. In this current situation, it was the mother who needed reassurance. The teacher approached the mother, reassured her that Sam was in good care and showed her that she knows/was aware of the child's needs. Parents often feel anxious and need constant reassurance. Whenever I met anxious parents, I made sure to keep in touch with them to update them with what is going on to 'win' their trust. When parents feel that their worries are understood and that their child is in good care, they tend to let go and focus more on working together with the educator.

I think that the calming behaviour of Sami who wanted to take part in this multi day school trip and his willingness to do so are the best answers for his mother. I would react in the same way as the teacher telling mum that we would be in touch at particular time during the day.

Sami's situation, I don't think it is a particular one and I am sure that every teacher has managed such situations in his career. It is clear that the boy's mother has great trust in the teacher, otherwise she wouldn't have left... and the teacher with a lot of experience and "kindness" knew how to "drive her away" and drive away her worries.

There would probably be solutions like: phone calls, written messages between the teacher and the parent, a short video of the child from the trip, which would dispel the mother's fears, but also the child's, telling him that his mother knows that he is doing well very well and alone.
