When Ellen was three, she moved to Long Island from Brooklyn. Her and her brother were standing on the edge of their front door stoop "frozen like statues " because they had never seen so much land. They were so used to the concrete that they did not know how to play in the dirty filled grass.

Thanksgiving is Ellen's favorite holiday because she enjoys time with family and friends. There are no distractions, just everyone interested in each other's lives and the quality time.

Childhood

Ellen is one of five children and described her childhood as "chaotic". She was the oldest child so she watched her brothers and sisters while helping her parents around the house. Ellen was always busy since her brothers were "Hell on wheels".

Sports Growing Up

Ellen played field hockey her sophomore year in high school till she graduated. She was known to be fast, yet preferred defense. She also had a boyfriend named Jay Wilkinson who was on the rifle team. So, along with one other girl, Ellen was on the rifle team. "I learned a lot about guns and how to really zero in on a target with focus".

Travel!

Geography was her favorite subject in school because she enjoyed learning about people around the world and their unique/ distinct cultures. When she got married, Ellen decided to travel Europe for her honeymoon and learn see the places she had previously learned about. Experiencing their traditions, foods, and way of life excited her.

Love at First Sight

When Ellen was in college, Oscar was dating one of her classmates. He stood out because he was one of the two Catholics working at the Methodist School of Nursing as a resident. Because of their religious similarities, they often went to church together and eventually started talking. Oscar and the classmate broke up and Ellen swooped in. Oscars demeanor towards his patients was very kind, compassionate and caring which drew Ellen in. She stated she was very impressed by him.

Oscar's Occupation

Oscar was a resident in the surgical program at Methodist Hospital while Ellen was enrolled in Medalist School of Nursing. Oscar was often in surgery or in a medical lab researching so she found ways to be around him like researching in the same dog lab focused on intestinal surgery. However, Ellen was quite inquisitive on intestinal surgery so she enjoyed the learning aspect as well.

Growing the Family

Oscar and Ellen had four children- Laura, John, Alicia and Andrew. Laura was the first born described as focused and energetic. When she was five, Laura was put into gymnastics to release all that energy. John, nicknamed "Conservation of Energy", was vert laid back and did well in school. Everything life came easy to him. Alicia was very dependent and often jealous of John and Laura's relationship because they were so close in age. "She never left my side because John and Laura pulled so many pranks on her she was afraid of them". Andrew is fourteen years younger than Laura. Since he was so young when the others were in school he often tagged along in a carseat to practices and extracurriculars.

After John's death, Ellen became very involved in advocacy of drunk driving. She became a state representative and traveled the country to share her experience with other grieving mothers. At John's school Wilbraham Manson Academy, the John L. Nepomuceno Prize Scholarship began to award a junior who resembled John's exceptional character and extraordinary qualities.

It gives you perspective on your life and the things you should've done or wished you could do now. You are however surprised your body is not functioning like you expected it to and are in denial of your limitations.

Hardest Thing a Mother Can Do

On April 11, 1987, John was killed by a drunk driver. Tragedy struck the Nepomuceno family and family, friends and the town mourned. He was only seventeen. "Burying my son was the hardest thing I have ever done. I was very mad at God and wanted to know why. Two years after his death, I asked God for a sign that he was happy and I came outside to see a double rainbow. I remember saying, 'Why does he have to be so happy?'".

The Big Day

On May 18th, 1968, Ellen McCormick and Oscar Nepomuceno got married.

She has eight grandchildren- four boys and four girls. "They're the joy of my life", from the oldest Gabby, twenty-two, with her happy disposition and lively free spirit to the youngest, Ms. Beatrice, a beautiful child full of energy, curiosity and mischief. Ellen sees Andrew's children close to two or three times a year because they live in Cincinnati. Alicia's children three or four times and year and Laura's children the most often because they live the closest geographically.
