Kids need structure, period. They need to know what to expect during the school day. Predictable routines will allow students to get into the habit of doing things which then may impact other areas like a reduction of student misbehavior. MLLs may experience anxiety or feel out of place in the classroom. Routines will allow MLLs to feel included in the classroom community as they know what to expect and know their role. Classroom jobs also give MLLs a role in the classroom and shows them responsibility.

Group work and partners allows for more interaction between MLLs and native English language speaking students. The interaction allows MLLs to develop both their verbal and social skills. For example, during Partner Work, students are able to help each other complete a learning task. Students can support each others' learning.

I have learned a lot about the needs of MLLs and how to support their learning. MLLs need to feel valued in their classroom and school community by their teachers and peers. School may already be difficult if they are unable to communicate their thoughts and feelings, so as a teacher, I hope to create a classroom environment where MLLs feel welcomed and valued. MLLs should not have anxiety about their learning or their communication. I hope to provide a quality education for my students, especially MLLs, and find the best practices so they can thrive. The three instructional strategies that I learned about and believe would best benefit MLLs are Predictable Routines, Visual Scaffolding, and Partner Work and Tutoring. For Predictable Routines, a daily schedule will benefit MLLs as they can read the schedule and anticipate what will happen throughout their day. For Visual Scaffolding, pictures may help MLLs gain a better understanding of concepts and vocabulary. For Partner Work and Tutoring, students can help support each other by working together to either achieve a learning task or skill.
Overall, I feel like I have learned many great instructional strategies that I can implement in my classroom. I also have learned more about MLLs, in general. As a teacher, I think it is important to do so since we live in Hawai'i where there's a lot of diversity in and out of our schools! It is my responsibility to know about my students and their backgrounds because we all are unique and have so many different things to offer. I would love for MLLs to feel like they are just as capable of receiving a quality education just as any other student, and by doing so, I hope all of my students will love learning.

Partner Work: Pair a MLL with a native English speaking student. The MLL may learn a lot from the other student. This may work in Math as the students can work together to learn concepts and figure out the problems

Peer Tutoring: A student who has already achieved a skill can help to tutor a student who has not achieved the skill yet. MLLs may benefit from this as they are getting extra support from another student and not just the teacher. Students could help each other learn vocabulary by testing each other.
