The three classes that existed in the 1960s were the working poor class, lower class, middle class, and upper class. The working poor class had Americans whose income was lower than the US’s poverty line. The lower class consisted of Americans whose incomes were just below the poverty line. The middle class consisted of Americans whose income was about 30,000 to 40,000 a year, they usually had three kids and in the suburbs, living in a house. The father would go out to earn money and the mother would stay home, being a homemaker. Then there was the upper class. These people were what they called “rich”. Most people were born into the class. Most people, out of the 1% - 6% who were upper class, were CEOs and executives.

There was war, there were protests, there was rock, there were nuclear bombs, and there was segregation. All of these things impacted history dearly and changed the lives of people forever.

The Greaser are known as delinquents belonging to the working class. They live on the east side of Tulsa, Oklahoma. They have a long, greasy hairstyle which lets people instantly recognize them. “The Greasers are viewed as trouble-makers and delinquents by the upper-class in Tulsa. As such, they are unfairly treated by the law and adults. They are known for being rough and dangerous. In reality, they are often attacked by the wealthy kids, or Socs, and have to defend themselves.”

The Socs were the rich kids (typically the older ones out of the family) who lived on the west side of Tulsa, Oklahoma. They have parties, and jump on kids who are walking alone, yet they still turn out to be the good guys. They are spoiled yet the community still favors them. They have rich, good families, and also have everything (at least seem to). The Socs are also more sophisticated. The Socs also jump on and bully the greasers. Socs and Greasers are rivals with each other.

Teenage fashion in the 1960s was affected a lot by hippie counterculture. For girls, they started to wear bell bottoms and miniskirts, as well as hip huggers and go-go boots. They also started to wear skirts that fell to their thighs, as well as dresses and jumpers. In dresses, a popular dress was shift dresses. Girls also wore chic coats and slim turtlenecks. For boys, they started to change their hairstyle, such as hair creeping over their shirt collar and afros starting to appear. They also wore business shirts with a tie, a sports jacket, or tailored slacks. Boys would also wear pullover sweaters for casual attire and slack sets and themed blazers for special occasions.

“At the beginning of the 1960s, pop and rock 'n roll trends from the 1950s continued before developing into a more electric style. By the end of the decade, a folk-influenced style of rock music dominated the scene, featuring singer-songwriters such as Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson and Joni Mitchell.” Beach music and guitar was also popular. A popular band was the Beach Boys, and popular American singers and actors were Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. The Beatles were so popular in the 1960s as well. Louder, Aggressive, and Harder music was more and more popular in this time. Dancing music was also louder and wilder. “The rise of Cold War politics, civil rights movements, student protests, and the Vietnam war all profoundly affected American society and culture.” This shows that many wars and protests occurred in the 1960s, which changed history for America.
