This event in the book was pretty frightening considering that his Mother actually stabbed him. When I read this I was shocked. He said that his Mother threatened to kill him before but she never actually did it. He wasn't ever scared by her threats until this one time where he noticed something different about her. David noticed his Mother swaying back and forth with the knife in her hand. She suddenly came at him and he was terrified.

This gives us a positive outlook on David's life before his mother had changed. This also makes the reader guess why the mother had changed all of a sudden.

But those two times didn't really matter to him. He just wanted to give up everything he fought for. David didn't want to live anymore in his dreadful household. David had enough.

All of the staff at the school already know why David gets abused though. The school nurse invites David to the office. She inspects him and writes down what had happened to him. The principal calls the police. David is terrified because he thinks he is in trouble. The police officer talks to David and takes him to the police station. The officer calls his mother and tells her that David is not going home. He drives David into the distance.

He always had a plan of a way to get food. He would go days, weeks without food. The only food he ever got from his mother was scraps and crumbs. He had an idea to eat food out of the trash can, until his mother put chemicals so he didn't eat the scraps and food while taking out the trash.
