The third class was comprised of mainly poor families who were seeking a better life in America. They enjoyed very few luxuries although they had comfortable living conditions. Majority of the passengers who died on the Titanic were third class. This was because crew members were ordered to close gates that lead to the upper decks so the first and second class passengers could be evacuated first. This resulted in the third class being stuck under sea level when the ship filled with water. One adult ticket for third class cost $10 which is equal to $885.07 today.

Despite the passing of King Edward VII in 1910 the Titanic is still regarded as an extension of the Edwardian period’s cultural and social values, containing within it the highest and lowest of society. Perhaps more importantly however the disaster of the Titanic has become symbolic of demise, not only of the physical ship, but of the society which it has come to represent.
