Uncertain of when he will leave or when he can escape this crippling loneliness and isolation from the “outside world”. He describes the outside world as almost a paradise, really emphasising the sheer negative impact of the detention centers on asylum seekers and how they treat them. In such isolation, Mortezza has lost hope, self confident, self identity and self worth, so much so to the point where he harms himself just to be recognised as a human being, showing the inhumane emotional treatment in these detention centers.

    -          Turned on TV and watched TV, because there was nothing else to do
    -          Watching movies till 2 or 3 o’clock 
    -          People come to visit till 1930
    -          Go back to room, have something to eat, then go back to watching TV
    -          Goes to medical centre, gets anti-depressants and sleeping pills
    -          By the time gets back to room so tired.

    ·       There was constant security and their payment wasn’t enough
    ·       There were people on high risk who had to be constantly watched
    ·       They had to apply if they wanted to look through their belongings or for cigarettes
    ·       There is large barbed wire fences surrounding it
    ·       The hot sun was constantly beating down on them and the heat became bad.

    -          After a couple of months, depression started to sink in
    -          The only way got though detention was through medication 
    -          Depression gives you that kick to self-harm or jump off the roof
    -          Once people do self-harm it gets media attention and this gives the person who has done it hope.
