When I first give English learning students a text, we complete a book walk and talk about what the author is trying to communicate about learning with us. I then read the book first to the students. By doing this I want to remove cognitive barriers such as decoding for students and give them access to the text. Students will then read the story with a task in mind that I give them. This could be something like highlighting details. After they read, we then have a collaborative discussion about the text.

It explores history, culture, and our place in the natural world with beautiful illustrations! I use a lot of visuals, repartitions, and demonstrations of what is expected when working with my ELLs. I have stand alone groups with the ELLs. I use the strategy I DO, WE DO, YOU DO. This has been so great. They understand expect what they need to do. I am able to answer any questions they have or help them along the way when they get to YOU DO part they are able to complete their work independently.

Last year, I was able to work with a teacher to provide copies in Spanish of some books that he used for classroom read-louds such as "Island Born" and "Lola" by Junot Diaz, and "Ada Magnifica Cientifica" and "Ada Twist, Scientist" by Andrea Beatty. It is harder to find parallel books in other languages but we did find some bilingual books in Dari/Farsi and Pashto. We also found a book on Eid in Spanish to use to help our Spanish speaking students understand why some of their classmates were fasting.

I think it is important to challenge students to consider multiple and diverse perspectives. How? I found the video on Translanguaging useful- as this term is omnipresent in the ESOL world now. The term has multiple meanings and is used differently depending on who is talking.

What struck me? "It's a whole system- not separate." I need to learn more about the epistimology of bilinguals. We can't ignore the language repertoire of our students. Students need to validated and their home languages honored. All bilingual communities translanguage. Why do our schools not allow it? We need to take translanguaging into account in our schools or it is not fair.

A resource we find helpful to communicate with families is Talking Points. It's a free app that will translate in many languages (not all). The trick is to be sure to be short and concise and try not to use multiple-meaning words or phrases as that will mess up the translation, but it's a great way to keep all families in the loop!

Last October, books on Halloween, Dia de los Muertos, and Diwali were featured. I build mini-units of study for each standard we address. Students follow an instructional routine - they begin by building background knowledge through images/videos/discussion, followed by a listening comprehension activity. I often have my students look over the text before they begin to fully read it. Sometimes when we are reading more challenging work I will have them highlight words that they already know in one color and words that prevent them from understanding the sentences/context in another so they can focus on the words they know to help them understand the words they don't know. If there is something that is preventing them from understanding the context of the sentences/paragraph we can take a look at the word together or with partner work they can share and help each other out to understand the material. -Brynn

As a foreign language teacher I love to look for a variety of different readings/articles/TV shows that show the diversity within the foreign language world (Spanish in my case). I think that it is important to help show my students the variety of different cultures attached to a language and it also introduces the native speakers to cultures outside of their own with the shared language. I loved the resources shared with multicultural books for children of all ages because I think it is the easiest way to introduce new culture and compare and contrast with their own. I incorporate pictures, diagrams, charts, and graphic organizers to aid comprehension. I use clear, concise sentences and try to avoid idiomatic expressions. I offer structured prompts and sentence frames to help ELs frame their responses.

To support my ML students, I ensure i maintain high expectations. I do not change the expectation of what is learned, but may vary how students demonstrate that learning. I maintain the expectation that everyone speaks every day. Some scaffolds that I incorporate in my lessons include sentence starters and frames, exemplars and models, graphic organizers, checklists, and visuals. By providing these scaffolds and maintaining high expectations, students are consistently being challenged to participate in their learning of grade level material.

To support my ML students I make sure to maintain high expectations for all my students. In my presentation of material, I make sure that I have various means of presenting material whenever possible, such as using visuals (written) with verbal instructions including images to assist students in assimilating understanding (with vocabulary-specific) information. Often we use cognates to make attempts to connect prior knowledge of students with the curriculum. Every student must speak every day, either spontaneously as part of the class conversation, asking questions,or sharing experiences that connect with learning. The challenge for many of my students is when asked to communicate with a peer that is unfamiliar with them, the turn and talk, can challenge many to have their own thoughts and be willing to share them, hopefully fostering a sense of independence and ownership toward their learning and participation.

The Skin I'm In is used as the main novel during the first trimester of my literacy intervention class. Other than using this novel to teach our literacy skill curriculum, we also delve into the idea of establishing your own identity, standing up for yourself and accepting others' differences.

Multicultural Literature

We use Gary Soto's Local News. A series of shorter stories from various family types. One short story is about to Latino brothers, one brother picks on the older brother. Two working parents, connected to bullying lessons. Another short story from the same book discusses a family with 4 children and two working families. Each of the children who are of working age is out working (as are the parents) to help support the family. This novel exposes and connects to many of our Latino families as many of their families also have multiple jobs and are all trying to work together to make ends meet.

I use mentor sentences and sometimes longer mentor texts. I find interesting sentences from texts we are reading and guide students in analyzing the syntax. They then create their own sentences using the same pattern. This technique can also be used to help students write a longer text in the style of a particular author.

I like using the picture book "I Hate English" with students of all ages. It gets people talking about their language learning experiences and their heart language.
