Brandon Barr
Photo of protesters in the US, expressing the negative view of the Vietnam War. (image from Wikipedia)
Although the US was involved in the deteriorating conditions in Vietnam since the early 1950's, it wasn't until Lyndon Johnson's presidency that the US fully committed combat troops to the country. During the early years of the war, the puppet regime in South Vietnam was responsible for brutal suppression of Buddhists, political opponents, and many others. The US had been supporting this regime in order to maintain a government friendly to the US. The Diem government would eventually fall to a coup that the US government and the South Vietnamese military leaders took part of.

Tanya Remchick

President John F. Kennedy took office on Friday, January 20, 1961, and ten days later gave a State of the Union Address that spelled out what he saw as the disasters of the previous administration: recession, bankruptcy, falling farm income, and unemployment. He proposed to increase government payments to the unemployed and boost the economy through industrial initiatives and international development. Herblock depicts the economy as a tired white-collar worker watching television.

James Lee
Parkland hospital was the hospital that John F. Kennedy was taken to after he was shot. The chaotic events rooted in this hospital. The doctors and nurses would have never imagined the president of the United States would come as a patient, and shock was very high. Thankfully, most of the chaos was calmed by the Secret Service. They also managed to retrieve the Zapruder film, one of the most clear film recordings of the assassination. It's amazing how the Secret Service went into action so quickly amongst all the chaos.

Alex Injaian
The painting by Dan Nance is one that I came across and I thought was very powerful. A veteran of the Vietnam War is kneeling before the monument, and behind him is a gruesome memory that is triggered while reading names of the people that lost their lives fighting where he easily could have lost his. It is a powerful reminder of the stress and anguish our soldiers go through when they come back home. "I was killed in Vietnam, I just haven't died yet."

Dan Willing
For years, the US aided South Vietnam until it was forced to intervene with the military in 1965. Each year until 1969, the number of troops increased. The war was in effort to stop the spread of communism and to make a bold statement to China & Russia. The Vietnam War continued until the 1970s, with heavy casualties on both sides. The effort in the end failed as Vietnam became a communist nation. Attached is a video clip from the movie Forrest Gump. It depicts them arriving to Vietnam alongside thousands of other troops in helicopters. Even though the Vietnam War was very violent, I chose the best nonviolent clip to depict the environment at that time.
(YOUTUBE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gh2DzGccvJc
