Hawaii

Date of Start of US Involvement: Hawaii got involved with the US in 1898..

Distance from US: The distance from the US is 3,624.30 mi.

Distance to closest US Territory: Midway- 1,273

Distance to China: From Hawaii to China is 5,961 miles.

Economic reasons for US involvement: the war enabled the United States to establish its predominance in the Caribbean region and to pursue its strategic and economic interests in Asia.

Military reasons for involvement: The United States wanted to use Hawaii as a platform from which they could have a dominant military presence in the Pacific. Hawaii was a militarily significant island throughout the Spanish-American War

Importance for the United States (Scale from 1-4) (1=not important- 4 super important) 4

Scale Justification: I rated this as a 4 because once America won the war, we produced a peace treaty that compelled the Spanish to relinquish claims on Cuba, and to cede sovereignty over Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines to the United States. The United States also annexed the independent state of Hawaii during the conflict.
