Hello! I am Argiro, a primary School teacher from Greece. I strongly believe in Game Based Learning and I try to implement it in my classroom. Lately, I've been using ICT more methodically in class and I was really amazed at the students' acceptance of the new learning style by which they were taught.

In my experience, most students dislike Maths or feel incable of understanding the subject, due to the fact that they think it has to do nothing with their everyday life (especially when textbooks enhance this belief because of their content...). Only when we try to reach to Maths through games or trying to solve riddles and problems in class the kids feel comfortable with Maths. So, if only we could offer them, game-based learning environments (for younger students) and both initiative and challenge (for older students), then every prejudice and frustration concerning Maths could be avoided.

My students are really fond of technology and videogames, so I try to engage them with ICT activities when possible. We mostly use web 2.0 tools and I am trying to implement Scratch coding in my lessons this year. However, the fact that we only have access to the computer lab twice or three times a week, makes it difficult to be as consistent I'd like. Last year they were really excited about games such as Minecraft, a fact that gave me the chance to do some unplugged STEM activities too.

Applying Maths skills to a real-world problem - PBL in the Maths classroom

Considering that I usually work with students aged 7-10, PBL is part of my lessons but with an emphasis on the creative part of it. For example, we take part in our school’s Christmas bazaar by creating our ornaments in teams and calculating how many will we need to create in order to reach a specific goal referring to our profits. The students, also decide the way we are going to promote the ornaments during the bazaar, so that the sales are successful. Although, at first, they seem a bit overwhelmed by the process of calculating and trying to figure out how to come up with a plan that will meet our goals, in the end they always manage to achieve them and be happy and excited while they do it.

The lesson that my students always love is about division. In the textbook there are always some math problems which ask the kids to divide cards, fruits, candies etc., so I always take with me a bag with baloons, stickers, candies or whatever can be used to intruige my students' interest and ask them to share the content of the bag in a fair way. I must admit that at first there are some coflicts concerning the way they are going to share the "goodies", but every single time the kids find a way to divide them fair and square. This way I introduce the way of thinking we need to solve a division problem for young learners!

Afterwards, we could continue by estimating the average quantity of the books in both of the libraries. As a result, the two pictures could be a starting point for us to study lots of aspects concerning Maths and even become a stimulus in order to combine Maths with other subjects, such as literature.

More than once, my students ask me and are curious about why they need to learn Maths since they prefer to be out in the fields tending crops or animals. That's the reason I asked one of the farmers to visit our class and describe to my kids how often was he using Maths in his everyday life. The students were impressed by the fact that Maths are everywhere and influence every aspect of their life.

Collaborative learning is a way that students always find fun to work with and understand whatever they are taught, since they learn from each other, having their teacher as a coordinator not an adept. However, if the foundations of this method are not well established from the beginning, mixed abilities could possibly be an obstacle. When the students realise that mixed abilities offer them the chance to collaborate more effectivelly, learning in teams seems to be the only way.

As I am already involved in multiple projects at the moment (one of them concerning coding, we do use lots of math abilities for that..!), I think that during the next school year it will be the first project I' ll start!! Especially, after this course. :)

Can you think of more reasons how digital technologies can help us teach Maths to our students? What are some of the downsides or dangers of using digital technologies in our Maths classroom?

Using digital technologies in the Maths classroom is a one-way road nowadays, since they allow educators to experiment more in their pedagogy and offer countless resources to students, making learning more fun and effective. We do live in a digital world, after all! However, technology can be a distraction too, especially in crowded classrooms. Another downside could be the fact that students do not have equal access to technological resources. All in all, educators are the ones who play the most important part in the success of ICT use in their class!!

What other resources, apps and tools do you know that could be useful when trying to implement a flipped classroom model? What challenges do you see in implementing the model?

Some truly interesting and useful resources for a flipped classroom model would be Desmos (www.desmos.com), GeoGebra (www.geogebra.org) and Explore Learning Gizmos (www.explorelearning.com). Flipped classroom model is lately gaining more supporters in education because it offers students the chance to take the initiative during the learning process. On the other hand, there are challenges such as the transition from traditional to modern teaching itself. For sure, it won't be easy for the teacher at first to give up the role which he represented until now.

A possible way to use it would be to create a worksheet that has qr codes besides each problem. Upon scanning the code a step by step tutorial is launched in YouTube explaining the process of solving the problem. Students can use it when they are stuch in a particular problem or when they want to check their work.
