How to identify fake news

Spotting fake news is getting increasingly difficult in recent years, especially as AI develops.

Here are a couple ways to make sure you're spotting fake news:

1) Fact check the Story - Does this story have any receipts or reliable sources. Is the story in multiple places or just this one instance? If a story is isolated and has no supporting evidence, this more often than not insinuates fake news.

2) The author - Does the creator have a reason to be bias? Is the author stating opinions or facts? Do they an agenda? If the author is trying to sell something, the story is most likely biased in their favour, omitting negatives that could be important. E.G. Elon Musk selling Teslas.

3) Authenticity of the Website - Is the website a government website or other credible resource, or is it an Open source material, social media or a blog page? Credibility of a website, while not fool proof or definitive, is a great first step to identify how reliable a story could be. Something is more likely to be true if posted on a regulated website such as the NHS page, rather than Facebook.

4) The date - Is the story recent, or old? If a story is recent, you should be able to find other posts or stories similar. If it's old, you have to be on the lookout for reposted material claiming to be new. For example, recently videos of bombings were posted claiming to be recent from the war in Ukraine, however were fact checked to be over 25 years old and just reposted to fear monger.

There are thousands of fake news stories every year - One of the most relevant ones is the fake news surrounding Covid-19 and miracle news.

One Twitter user said he heard "first hand that a doctor who had Corona virus recovered in double quick time" after inhaling steam.

This had over 40,000 shares however in reality there's no evidence that steam inhalation works as a treatment for coronavirus.

This advice is also potentially harmful.

High-temperature steam-cleaning of surfaces in hospitals and elsewhere does destroy the coronavirus (as well as other types of viruses) says Prof Keith Neal, a specialist in the study of the spread of infectious diseases at the University of Nottingham.

However, any attempt to inhale steam at this temperature, would be extremely dangerous and risk burns.

Coronavirus: Fake and misleading stories that went viral this week - BBC News
