Do you agree with the ideas and examples shared by Eszter and Maria? What other strategies, actions, can we take as teachers to bring the joy of learning into families? How can we as teachers facilitate family and student learning by helping our students “teach” at home? Share your thoughts and ideas here.

I believe that, as children grow, their parents’ role in their learning changes, but one thing remains constant: parents are children’s learning models. Their attitudes about education can inspire them and show them how to take charge of their own educational journey.

Especially in the early years, parents are their children’s first educators — exploring nature, reading together, cooking together, and counting together. When a young child begins formal school, the parent’s job is to show him/her how school can extend the learning they began together at home, and how exciting and meaningful this learning can be. As preschoolers grow into school age kids, parents become their children’s learning supporters. Through guidance and reminders, parents help their kids organize their time and support their desires to learn new things in and out of school.

I totally agree with Eszter and Maria. It’s very important to try to bring fun into the learning process in the families. They refer to activities as the “Family Literacy nights” or the project “one book, one community”, or the “maths problem”, that all activities that Maria and Eszter refer as way how students can bring learning into families, while the teacher is a facilitator of such process. This would allow to do family projects where parents get involved and understand the importance of becoming a lifelong learner. Other ways of doing this is create “family reading nights”. Parents go to and read with their children as well as speak with teachers about reading. Another way is organizing an after-school homework club, where many children are left those hours following the end of the school day, where parents with free time, or after work can go to help kids doing homework.

They may require additional time for the planning and implementation of the various activities.

as my other Italian colleagues, I watched the video with a shade of envy: in our system things like the event showed in the third video are very difficult to organize unless your school is in a deeply disadvantaged area. our parents are practically impossible to be involved, beside they are from a different country and culture. during the years I noticed that italian parents are less interested in their children school life than the foreigner do. that's because for who is coming from abroad the school still represent a way of integration and rescue from a well worst social position... I don't know how we could get back to Montessori's students educating their families bringing back home what they have learnt at school...

In the USA parent associations have a great weight in school management while in Portugal everything is centered on the Ministery of Education thus simple things like opening the school after hours may not be possible at all.
Promoting reading activities that envolve simultanously kids and parents seems a good path. This is why I'll try to implement my lesson plan that is about bringing parents to the language classroom to share a story they enjoyed when they were young (telling or reading from a book) .

Teaching that takes shape in the daily lives of students and families can help families realize the importance of what students learn. Parents should realize the importance of teachers' work. We all hear and admire those who care about us.

I totally agree with Eszter and Maria and I truly believe that the vision that parents have over education is reflected in their children learning development. I work with small kids in kindergarten and usually the projects that I develop includes the support and the real practice at home with their parents. When developing e-Twinning projects like Plant a tree for Peace, Family Tree, Christmas cards exchange, kids had my help and their parents help. They came to kindergarten and presented the result of their work as a team, or they came at class and we all worked together kids-parents-teacher. It is a great opportunity to make parents fall in love with education and embrace the process of the evolution of their child.

At school, in the last few days, I am proposing activities on "Wordle-cloud" and on the "Storybird" portal. In the latter we have created a virtual class, children are invited to create stories, when and where they want, then stories are read in class by the "author". Children and parents love these activities. In their homes, many children along with their parents are "experimenting" with these activities.

In my case I think that the fastest and most effective way to reach students and also to parents is through tacnologies.

Because my students are adolescents it is more difficult to put some of the examples into practice, but it is not impossible, we just have to go around the subject and work from the interests of the students. I completely agree with the fact that students can and do have the power to bring parents to school.I love the idea of literature night.

I think these activities are easier with younger children. With teenagers as subjects become more demanding, most times parents find it difficult to keep up with the demanding level of difficulty. The ones who can afford it pay for private lessons, or some after-school supporting service. However, aiming other goals, namely bringing parents into the school to keep them closer, I think Azize Ozcan's idea of contests, quizz shows and even literature day may be quite effective. At least I am willing to try them.
