As Ellie and her Grandfather experiment away with their new toy they find odd things that they thought they would never find. Some things happen along the way of the experiment will Ellie and her Grandfather be able to face it?

Ellie loves her cat, Jonas. Once Jonas is dying, Ellie try's everything she can think of to heal him, including Ellie's and her Grandfather's science experiment. Ellie's heart tragically shatters after his death, and her POV changes from being super happy and excited over the experiment to being upset and unhappy. Jonas represents love in the story and shows love to Ellie.

In the beginning of the book Ellie despises eating mushrooms she could barely stand them. Ellie never thought she would like them until she had some of Mr. Ham's lasagna with mushrooms inside where she realized mushrooms aren't all that bad. The mushrooms represent the changes in Ellie that happen throughout the book.

Ellie has a hard time without her best friend Brianna. After the best friends split Ellie feels left out out of everything Brianna does in volleyball without her. I can relate to Ellie because once I started middle school and has some good friends they all left me for volleyball which I tried but failed to attempt. I struggled trying everything I had to still be in their group which I soon felt left out of. My advice for her is a bible verse. The verse says, "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." (Isaiah 41:10) This verse helps me whenever I have a lot going on with my friends and don't know what to do.

Ellie lives in a small house but not in a bad neighborhood. Her parents had a split which makes it hard for her mom to earn money all by herself not being able to provide such a big house. As Ellie wanted a dog throughout the first book her mom and her soon to be husband decide that the house is to small for a dog and a cat would be a right fit. The house is the perfect amount of space for the cat. Once the cat dies Ellie is filled with memories inside of the house of her cat making her feel overwhelmed and sorrowful.

Throughout the book, Ellie learns that trying new things involving in her friend life, romantic life, and science life are important to try. Melvin Cruz, Ellie's Grandfather helps through the whole experiment guiding Ellie from the wrong to the right. As Ellie lives her life she notices changes in how important things are once you try them.

The internal conflict around Ellie is her dealing with all the problems around her. Ellie struggles with the fact that her best friend and her might be dating or the fact that her science experiment could go way wrong. Ellie has numerous problems going on and many emotions such as anger, worry, confusion, and sadness. Ellie can't handle the problem between her and Raj her best friend, she can't seem to find out what to do about them. The internal struggle involves Ellie feeling weird about everything and her trying to figure who she is and what she was made for. Was it science? Who knows!?!
