Some of the troops made it on-land, but it was already morning and they didn't have the factor of surprise behind their back. Only the minority made it past the German gunfire, but then most of them ended up surrendering and being captured.

Italian campaign began when the Allied forces took over Sicily through Operation Husky (lasted more than four weeks)

Capturing Sicily helped secure the Mediterranean Sea for Allied shipping and contributed to the downfall of Mussolini. The new Italian government then surrendered to the Allies and the Allies’ next step was to land in mainland Italy 

Then, the troops took over Italian Mainland (in the Battle of Ortona) forcing them to engage in vicious street fighting + mouseholing.
