The German army had swept through France in 6 weeks, leaving Britain the lone ally at that point in the war. Hitler had expected that, with France’s defeat, Britain would begin to push for peace negotiations. However, PM Churchill’s own words after the Dunkirk Evacuation, “...we shall never surrender”, stiffened the British resolve to fight to the end. Hitler even offered a deal to Britain, allowing her to keep her kingdom and colonies if she fought for the Axis powers. However, Churchill believed that Germany, being the threat to democracy, was to be defeated at all costs, even if it meant Britain would fall.

The Battle of Britain was not purely a British fight. Pilots from all across the world joined up to fight for the Royal Air Force. These included men from the Commonwealth nations, United States, and even pilots from European countries annexed by Germany. These included (Free) France, Czechoslovakia, and even Poland. The famous Polish 303 Squadron , consisting of entirely Polish pilots (commanded by a Canadian), were known to be the most aggressive pilots in the Air Force, as they shared hatred against German and Hitler for annexing their country at the start of the war.
