What is Consumerism?

Consumerism is over-purchasing products to fulfill economic, social and psychological needs. Consumer culture places value on buying excessive amounts of goods and services, which has created a dramatic spike in purchasing. A consumer is someone who is able to buy goods and services beyond their basic needs (also referred to as middle class).

Consumerism is important from an economic, sociological, and environmental perspective.

Economic:
From an economic view, consumerism is a positive thing, as companies can use consumerism to produce goods and services based on what the popular demand is.

Sociological:
Consumerism is significant from a sociological aspect because it is seen as a negative influence to define ourselves based on what we buy and where we buy from.

Environmental:
Consumerism is negative from an environmental standpoint. We are currently overusing over 70% of the Earth’s natural resources. If we continue to over purchase as we are right now, by 2040, we would have no more water, as our consumer society uses more water than the Earth can provide. And by 2048, we will run out of seafood, unless we stop overfishing. Therefore, consumerism overuses the Earth’s resources, resulting in a large environmental impact.

Consumerism impacts the environment as our planet cannot keep up with the amount of products and services we purchase. From a sociology perspective, consumerism negatively impacts working class communities, as our society has now given us statuses based on how much we buy and where we buy from. For example, you have a higher social status if you have many fancy cars, because that’s how our society views success. So, without the fancy cars and clothes and gadgets, society can deem a person unsuccessful when that is far from the case. Consumerism also negatively affects poorer countries because the pollution that they experience there, when producing all of these products, heavily affects their air quality and environment

The modern concept of consumerism started in the 1600s in Europe, and then intensified 1700s and 1800s. The Industrial Revolution began in the 1700s in England and soon spread to many other countries in Europe and North America. As a result of the economic freedom of the time period, these factories were able to produce countless number of inventions and products on a mass-scale. This led to consumerism because it created the system in which people could reasonably afford a variety of goods. Consumerism further developed in the 20th century. marketing campaigns of the 20th century became much more sophisticated. This caused an explosion in modern consumption rates, as marketing is still an important consumerist tool in the 21st century.

The Consumers Council of Canada works towards creating a better, more efficient, more effective and safer marketplace for consumers. They work towards improving consumers’ ability to navigate marketplaces, through research and listening to consumers, which will improve consumers’ everyday lives. Although this organization does not directly address consumerism, one of their initiatives is to represent consumers in legislative processes, meaning that they will address overconsumption through the legal system.
