"'What would you yourself think, if he or any other had acted the same part to me throughout, as you have to Annabella?' 'I would blow his brains out.' 'Well, then Arthur how can you call it nothing?' ... 'The cases are different'" (Bronte 235-236)

When Helen tries to get him to see things from any other perspective other than his own, he dismisses her and insists that his circumstance is completely different. This chapter shows themes of Huntingdon's lack of empathy. He continuously minimizes and mocks Helen's feelings, and this shows how his "one flaw" of thoughtlessness creates every issue between him and Helen. If Huntingdon does not reconsider his actions, their marriage may become miserable for both of them.

At this point in the novel, little Arthur is now a year old and Arthur is finally showing affection towards him. Arthur wants to leave again to London for business but does not invite Helen and Arthur to come with him. This deeply hurts Helen's feelings and she realizes that Arthur just does not want her around when he is spending time with his friends. While Arthur is gone, he does not write affectionately or often to Helen. At the very end of the chapter, we discover that Arthur has informed Mr. Hargrave about his date of return but not Helen.

At the beginning of the chapter, Helen is constantly sad about Arthur and his actions. She feels hopeless and like she has no control or influence over the way he treats her. Towards the end of the chapter, she realizes how blind she was when Walter tells her that Arthur never intended on coming back home when he said he was. This shifts Helen's sadness towards Arthur into a more angry and vengeful feeling.

Helen is standing up much more to Arthur's imprudence and apathy towards everything/everyone but himself. She persecutes him for his blatant distaste in and dismissive behavior towards their baby, finally condemning his irrational demeanor after consistently convicting herself as the problem in the relationship. At the same time, she empathizes deeply with him and feels for his self deprecation, practically spiraling over the yearning desperation for Arthur to repent. Even though she directly confronted him over his inexcusable actions, she still wound up being the consoler in the end and fell weakly beneath his demands and threats of leaving.
