Marcelo Hernandez Castillo begins his memoir by reflecting on what his first encounter with ICE agents was like. This is a significant moment both in the story and in his life because Marcelo is forever changed after this encounter. The encounter exemplifies the fear and trauma that he and millions of immigrants across America constantly experience. He explains that he was sure "ICE had been watching [him] for a very long time" (5), and that "perhaps the fact they they left [them] was their punishment—We'll be in touch—a message that there was nowhere [they] could hide, that they were always watching (6). In this instance, Marcelo emphasizes Theme 3: the Immigrant Experience, by describing to what extent he feels under surveillance and threatened by ICE agents. This fear does not ever seem to go away, even after he is granted a green card. Therefore, this is one of the most significant events throughout the whole memoir.
