Our mobile phones has become our topic guide, travel agency, best restaurant locator, map and more. Its by our side during the entire purchase journey. In fact according to trip advisor 45% of users use their smart phones for everything having to do with their holidays. Hilton have introduced an app where customers can let Hilton know when they are arriving and also let customers pick their own room. Navigate is a platform that is used on TUI cruises. It allows customers to book photoshoots, excursions and book tables at their speciality restaurants. Navigate also shows customers their itinerary and the cruise timetable of whats happening that day and where to go to take part. Airlines have realised the importance of WIFI and how the feature is important to their customers. WIFI is available in the air depending what airline customers are flying with, many airlines like British Airways offer WIFI for a small fee but there are handful of airlines that have free WIFI onboard, such as Emirates and Turkish Airlines.

Birmingham Airport have launched their new security hall, they have invested in new technology including scanning equipment to be able to process travellers quickly under the new regulations imposed by the UK government. Prior to online check in people used to spend house in a queue to check in at the airport. Due to technology it has cut down the queue as most airlines allow customers to check in up to 24 hours before the flight departs.

Although technology has made it easier for customers to book holidays it means that less people are booking their holidays in store. Britain's biggest holiday company is to close on third of its high street travel agencies. The company said it will close 166 of its 516 high street stores in the UK and Ireland "as it adapts to change in customer behaviour". The move by TUI will cost 900 jobs, but many may be saved by redeployment. A new homeworking sales and service team will be created. Customer behaviours have already changed in recent years, with 70 per cent of all TUI UK booking taking lace online. Andrew Flintham, the managing director of TUI UK and Ireland, said "We believe Covid-19 has only accelerated this change in purchasing habits, with people looking to buy online or wishing to speak with travel experts from the comfort of their own home."

The cost of living crisis refers to a period of time which the cost of everyday essentials e.g. bills and food increases more than average. In October 2022, prices of consumer goods and services rose by 9.6% which was the fastest rate in four decades. If the cost of living is increasing, there is less disposable income for people to be spending on luxuries.

Brexit

As a result of leaving the European Union the pound is weaker meaning that people get less for their money.

Covid-19

As a result of Covid-19, there was supply chain issues that caused prices to rise. After a decade of muted price gains, inflation fears have cropped up again as the costs of many goods and services have spiked this year. The ongoing pandemic has played a leading role in the jump in inflation as lingering COVID induced supply chain disruptions have maid it difficult to find some items while driving up consumer prices. Historically, health pandemic have caused significant shocks to the U.S. economy. Flu pandemics in 1957 and 1968 were followed by economic downturns while the 1918 Spanish Flu was extremely disruptive to the entire society at the time. The nature of a pandemic causes both a demand shock as consumers pull back on activity and a supply shock as businesses shutdown or reduce operations.

Almost half of consumers believe in the rising cost of living will have some impact on their holiday plans. The 42% figure came from a poll of 2,000 people conducted by the Post Office in October. The compares with research a month earlier which found that 59% of those considering an overseas holiday said their plans were likely to be impacted by the volatility of sterling.

Those that are booking holidays at higher price points - sort of £600-£800 per person and more - are proving more resilient than those that would be booking holidays for £300-£500 and less, So that tends to be the difference between 5 star and 3 star destinations. The decrease in the number of package holidays being booked due to the cost of living crisis primarily affects budget conscious customers. This includes families, students, and individuals who typically rely on affordable travel options.

Millennials represent the age group born during between the mid 90's and early 2000's. Millennials have significantly impacted the travel and tourism industry as they tend to stay in education longer. With more time spent in education, many millennials delay major travel experiences, often opting for shorter trips or budget friendly options during school breaks rather than longer vacations. Millennials value experiences over material possession. This has led to a rise in demand for unique travel experiences, such as adventure tourism, cultural immersion, and eco friendly trips. Growing up with technology, millennials utilize digital platforms for travel planning and booking. This has pushed the industry to enhance online services, mobile apps, and social media marketing. Millennials often share their travel experiences on social media, influencing others and creating trends in travel destinations and activities.

We live in a society where things are constantly changing, and this therefore means that our demands as consumers change constantly too. More recently after covid-19 travellers have remembered all the things they love about travelling and exploring the world and how their travel impacts the world. Due to this new trends have emerged and existing trends have accerlated.

In 2020, British Airways stopped using plastic items such as drinks stirrers, packaging, water bottles, and retail bags. They replaced them with environmentally friendly alternatives from bamboo, paper, and recycled plastic. This may be a small change, but it has had a considerable impact, and British Airways aimed for these changed to result in 700 tons of single-use plastic being eliminated from their flights annually.

Emirates has also been combatting single-use plastic waste since 2019. The airline began simply by replacing plastic straws with paper ones, then paper bags for in flight purchases instead of plastic ones. They believe these changes could prevent over 80 million single-use items from ending in landfills.

Premier Inn has been working hard towards their sustainability targets. In Swindon last year they opened a new hotel. The hotel uses renewable electricity with the help from its many solar panels. The hotel has been made to not use gas, this is a pilot scheme for Premier Inn and if successful they will grow their portfolio of properties by removing gas connections to its hotels by 2040.

In the past, travellers would rely on travel agents, guidebooks and brochures to plan their holidays. Now, travellers are much more likely to use visual social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook to find destination, inspiration, research hotels and plan activities. A customer might come across a unique hotel on Instagram and add it to their "bucket list" folder. By the time their ready to plan a trip, they might plan an entire vacation centered on staying at that one hotel. When travellers are ready to book, Social Media has also made it easier for them to use. Now, customers can click on a tour operators page from Instagram and book an excursion right then and there, without having to switch devices.

Please revisit the class PP to add these. 06.03 - Well done - Demi this is excellent work, very detailed and included a wide range of sources You have since gone back to your missed heading on your original feedback - well done you have achieved a distinction.
