“I can’t breathe. You're going to kill me, man.” These were George Floyd’s last words before he was killed by a cop. This is just one of the many horrific killings that black people have experienced. Justice has still not been served for so many of these people. I chose a video that I felt really captured the emotions and reality of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Black Lives Matter is an extremely important movement, and the purpose is to combat and stand up against racism. African Americans experience racism and police brutality so often, and it needs to be talked about and put to an end. The movement is bringing these issues to attention and trying to get victims the justice they deserve. No one should ever be treated differently because of the color of their skin and that is what Black Lives Matter stands for.

In the video I chose, it really shows how many people have been affected by police brutality and how racism is still a huge problem today. So many deaths have taken place but so little justice. This summer, a large amount of people started protesting and rioting for black rights. I went to two of the protests, and it is incredible to see so many people coming together to help the world change for the better.

Martin Luther King Jr once said, “There comes a time when silence is betrayal.” It is so important to speak up and help make change. I know I will never fully understand what they are going through, but I will continue to stand.

“Black Lives Matter” is not only an organization, but it’s also a statement and a movement. A movement that started on July 13, 2013. The movement is about fighting against police brutality against black people. This year on May 26, the movement became a revolution. George Floyd was murdered by Derrick Chauvin, he was kneeling on his neck. George Floyd kept saying “I can’t breathe” and he wouldn’t move. The death of George Floyd was the last straw. Black people have been dealing with racism and prejudice for too long. It’s time for a change.

I chose this poem because it reminded me of the argument people often use against the statement “Black Lives Matter” which is “All Lives Matter”. A lot of the people that say that don’t really care about all lives they just want to silence black people because what we go through “doesn’t affect them”. They also think “Black Lives Matter” means “Black Lives Matter Only”. But what this poem also means to me is the people who choose not to speak up about these problems, especially people who can make a change. This poem also means, to me, that a lot of people have more of a problem with the statement “Black Lives Matter” than the fact that black lives in America aren’t being treated like they matter.

The issue I'm discussing today is the coronavirus mask protests´ and how it's affecting America. The governors of certain states are starting to mandate masks around the country as a preventative measure to stop the spread of COVID 19. Some people do not believe that masks are important. Scientists have stated that masks prevent the spread of droplets when someone sneezes, coughs, talks, and even breaths that may contain the COVID 19 virus. By stopping the spread of COVID 19 containing droplets in the fabric of face coverings, people decrease the risk of becoming infected. Some of the time people do not always know that they are infected; some people do not even have symptoms and can still spread the virus before they are aware they are infected. By wearing a mask or a face covering, one can help all people in the community to stay safe. Sometimes people try to use other objects as masks, but the medical and cloth masks are the safest option.
Around our country, people are seen protesting the mask mandates. Why would people protest the use of masks if it can prevent the spread of disease? Some of the claims that are made include wearing masks are ineffective, the coronavirus is fake, it infringes on their rights, and that they suffocate them. In my opinion, these protesters are simply entitled. They do not want to be slightly uncomfortable even if it saves lives. Gone are the days of victory gardens, food rations, and self sacrifice for the benefit of all Americans. They do not understand how it can affect their communities. My parents are health care workers, and everyday they expose themselves to the virus. They risk their lives to help keep everyone healthy. They also see first hand what can happen to people who are hospitalized with COVID 19. Even with all of the scientific data and risks associated with contracting COVID 19, some people still refuse to wear masks for petty reasons.

The reason I have chosen to talk about Covid-19 today is because this virus has been around for a pretty long time and is hurting the country. In my own words this virus has hurt a lot of kids because they want to enjoy their senior year but instead they have to sit at home and do e-learning or they have to do online school. This virus is something they people did not think would affect their everyday life but, instead has affected everyone worldwide. This also means people have to adapt to this way of living for a little while so they can work or go to school and many other things. When this all first started it was different because everyone had to stay at home and were not allowed to go anywhere unless they were going for essentials. The thing is once you stay at home for about a month you get bored and tired of everyone in your house and want to go do something with your friends. During my time in quarantine I watched a lot of Netflix and did a lot of art related things to pass the time. That is how my day by day went for a long time. Wake u watch Netflix do art stuff and then watch some more Netflix.

I did an artwork and I think it embodies the issue because it has lots of things on the paper that relate to the issue. For example I have a mask because if you go out in public you have to wear one now. I also added toilet paper and Covid-19 because Covid is the virus name and the toilet paper was one item that was sold out in a bunch of stores because everyone thought that they needed it since we had to stay home. Also have a gas mask on my drawings because when people are working with patients who have Covid they have to wear all kinds of things so they would not get infected while they are trying to help so many people.
