Professional Practices and Cultural Awareness

For me the most important aspect when assisting people from migrant and refugee backgrounds, is to be aware of my own cultural beliefs, values, and biases so they do not impact their healthcare consultation. This understanding will be valuable to me in the workplace to lower the chance of any cultural insensitive practices occurring which may negatively impact health outcomes and ensure that I act in an appropriate manner according to their culture and beliefs. I feel that by respecting a patient’s culture and understanding that it will influence the decisions about their healthcare outcome, I will be able to apply better patient focused care, treat them with dignity and respect and effectively communication to be able to provide them with quality access to healthcare in Australia.

login.microsoftonline.com.
Social Determinants and their effect on Health

Social Determinants, non-medical factors which influence an individuals' health outcomes. Migrants and refugees that relocate to another county such as Australia, face many challenges such as accessing a job, housing and having community networks. Some find it difficult to gain employment as their overseas qualifications are not recognised in Australia, therefore taking on menial or low sort after jobs with low pay and hours to support themselves and family in turn effecting their mental health and wellbeing.

A sense of belonging can also affect their health and wellbeing. Developing relationships with others through cultural and ethnic connections, enables support, work connections, life skills and friends. However, making connections outside cultural and faith groups, with limited English skills can lead to discrimination or racism from wider community.

Moving to another country is a huge step, leaving their place of birth and sometimes family. Worrying about somewhere to live upon arrival is detrimental to their health. Housing can be limiting and does not always suit family requirements and cost of rent can be unaffordable. Not having home security prevents migrants/refugees from having a positive integration into Australian society and a sense of inclusion therefore affecting their health and wellbeing.

Anon, (n.d.). Australian Refugee Health» Primary Care for People of Refugee Backgrounds.

Mental health amongst refugee and migrants is high due to experiencing trauma - war, family separation, language barriers, housing and financial instability, loss of community and cultural connections. To best support individuals coming into our country, it is recommended that all arrivals undergo an assessment of emotional wellbeing and mental health to determine correct healthcare outcomes.

New arrivals are at risk of being under-immunised or unimmunised when they enter Australia affecting not only their physical health but could also impact other Australians. To help combat spread of preventable diseases and to ensure all new arrivals are properly immunised, catch-up immunisations are administered to migrants and refuges to the equivalent of an Australian-born person of the same age.

People with refugee or migrant backgrounds, may not have access to proper healthcare in their home countries, therefore may not have had an assessment of hearing, vision, or oral health.
