Soil Conditioning SJ
What is soil conditioning?

Soil conditioning is the process of changing the properties of the soil, to suit a planned purpose. Conditioning may be different depending on what the planting plan is, and the initial qualities of the soil.
Soil conditioning typically means applying lots of organic material to the soil - compost and manure are most common, sometimes gypsum is added as the calcium aids in developing soil structure. If a soil's acid or alkaline level is a real issue, adding sulfur or lime can be used to lower or raise the pH - though typically this is only commercial activities such as crops or turf growing. In garden settings, it's best to use plants that prefer the naturally occurring pH of the soil, as maintaining an artificial pH is a never-ending task.

Adding organic matter (compost, manure etc) to soil will benefit pretty much all soils.
It enhances water retention so less watering will be required and plant access to nutrients is improved.
It feeds the bacteria in the soil, enabling healthy quantities of the bacteria or soil microbes and worms to thrive... these produce nutrients and aerate the soil.
It helps balance soils of all pH ranges, bringing the soil into an optimum range for nutrient availability.
It helps add structure to the soil and helps break up tighly bound clay and silt particles, which along with freeing up nutrients, enables healthier root growth.
eventually achieving the goal of a loamy, nutrient-rich, well aerated soil.

Plants therefore will be as healthy as possible due to the optimum access to nutrients and air.
