Ideally it should be recyclable or reusable and if not then biodegradable.
When choosing a sustainable package you should look at the whole picture from function to marketing and to the end of its life and if rebirth is possible (recyclable)

there is plenty of controversy over which is better for liquid products, PET plastic is definitely the better of the plastics (can be used for around 1 1/2 years before needing to be replaced) and aren't easily broken when dropped, while glass is recyclable and reusable for as long as it is not broken, they are more easily cleaned and the overall look is more luxurious but they cost more to manufacture and ship.

For the purpose of my product i have chosen to go with glass packaging, as they are easily recycled or can be reused and there can be an incentive for doing so. The product will also stay pure (no nasty chemicals will leak from the bottle into the elixir and damage the product) and is oxygen proof (unlike plastic bottle/containers.

It is still unsure if this is the best way for the environment compared to PET bottles but it is certain that compared to plastics with the #7 glass is much friendlier on the environment - relates to my TA Jackie and Lissa because jackie protects the earth as it is the source of her power (witchcraft - earth - environment) and environmentally friendly products and packaging is important to Lissa as she is an animal lover and the environments condition will affect the animals residing in said environment.

Advancing technology and manufacturing is allowing glass to be made lighter (done during the production process) , this has a positive effect on the environment as it reduces the use of raw materials (saving materials) and Co2 emissions. Basically it thins down the sides of the bottles while still keeping them 100% recyclable and as durable as a normal glass bottle.

Lightweight glass also means you can transport more glass at a time therefore it reduces the impact transportation has on the environment

Other advantages include easy branding of graphics onto cardboard - good for specific customer requests, Cheap to buy and easily sourced either in bulk or in small amounts

the downsides of using cardboard is as durable as bamboo or wood, it isn't waterproof so any spillage that could occur during transportation will create a rather big mess and will cause the cardboard to tear. Also unless secured heavily with tape the transportation of heavy products may cause the cardboard to break or open, spilling products because they don't have high endurance levels for mechanical stress. While designed they aren't designed to be reused for multiple of the same or simpler purposes

Dell turned to non-conventional materials to cut wasted resources and save money: for example, around 70% of Dell's laptops are now shipped inside bamboo packaging. Not only is bamboo one of the world's most sustainable materials - it can grow up to 2ft a day in perfect conditions - it can be sourced close to Dell's factories in China. The firm has also developed an organic, biodegradable material that combines common agricultural waste products such as rice or cotton hulls with mushroom spawn, which results in a strong material that Dell claims performs better in drop tests than traditional Styrofoam.
Via http://www.packaging-gateway.com/features/featurebeyond-the-box-4473887/
