When we think about consumption we ask how what we buy and use relates to our identities, values, class, cultural background and our emotions. The two theorists below and on the right, were writing in the nineteenth and early twentieth century but they are still important to how we think about consumption today.

Marx's ideas about society, economics and politics form the basis of much of contemporary thought and analysis about consumption.

Marx used the term 'commodity fetishism' to explain that under the capitalist system in which we live, once an object has been assigned a monetary value, it is 'fetishised'. This means that consumers come to believe that the object’s value appears to come from the commodity itself, rather than the human labour that has produced it.

Can you think of a specific example and explain how we might apply this idea of commodity fetishism, e.g. designer trainer collaborations.
