The central focus of both works is life after death, and how humans can torture each other. The premises for both No Exit and The Good Place are very alike. The premise of No Exit is that three people, all very different in personality, are brought to a room in Hell. All of them expected to be tortured, but they soon realize that their torture is simply being stuck in that room with the other people for the rest of time. The premise of The Good Place is that when people die, they are sent to either “the good place” or “the bad place” based on their life on Earth. Eleanor Shellstrop was mistakenly sent to “the good place”, and ever since then, disaster struck. With the help of three other people sent to “the good place”, Eleanor strives to become a better person, and stay in “the good place”. These works are very similar, however, there are a few differences. In No Exit, the characters never really tried to improve, while in The Good Place, Eleanor constantly made efforts to improve herself.

In No Exit, the characters learn of their destiny before coming into the area, however Estelle still insists that some mistake has been created, that she was sent to the incorrect place by accident. within the smart Place, Eleanor who is certain that she’s within the wrong place, that there’s no means she belongs within the community. The irony is that Estelle is psychoneurotic, whereas Eleanor has bigger self data than anyone else within the show. They each belong in Hell. Also, No Exit could be a sexual drama. Inez is drawn to Estelle, whois drawn to Garcin. Garcin is tempted by Estelle, however his concern of Inez’s perception of him makes it not possible to have interaction with Estelle. everycharacter craves validation and fears condemnation from the others’ eyes, and that they specific it through sexual advances. Meanwhile, there’s a love triangle within the Good Place as well. Tahani and Eleanor each confess their love for Chidi in an episode. Chidi is overwhelmed by being forced to come to a decision between them (and another character that ends up being a demon in disguise), then he choses none of them. In their love triangle, Eleanor and tahani at first react competitively against one another, however find themselves bonding in the end.

Characters→Relationships: C.O.

In both The Good Place and No Exit, the futures of the characters rely on their relationships with each other. With No Exit, every character is tortured by the other two characters, whether they consciously realize it or not. Estelle is constantly tortured by Inez because Inez is obsessed with her, and never leaves her alone. Inez is constantly tortured by Estelle because the thought of Estelle never liking her back is torture enough. Inez is tortured by Garcin simply because of his presence, and his constant existence. They also got into frequent arguments about Estelle. Garcin was tortured by Inez because she never gave in to his need for social interaction. All of the characters tortured each other in some way in No Exit. In The Good Place, not every character tortured every other character. Some characters, like Jason, never really got tortured by Chidi or Eleanor, but instead did the torturing unconsciously with his lack of intelligence. Eleanor tortured Chidi for a short while, but after that, they started to help each other. Each character helped another in some way in the show, whether that was with Chidi’s ethics lessons, or with Eleanor bringing Tahani back down to Earth. Each character’s relationships with the other characters overall helped each person grow, and become better.

Setting: S.B.

In No Exit, the setting was a perfect existentialist “laboratory” (aka hell) to study three separate individuals who are divorced from the people they knew. They were left in an empty room/cell. Their feelings and actions seemed to define exactly who they really are. In addition to this, the lack of mirrors seems to really amplify the situation. In the good place, most of the series was filmed at Universal Studios in Hollywood, with the village exteriors being mainly shot on the Little Europe backlot. Many of the other locations, such as the Chinese Garden, were shot at The Huntington Collection & Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California. They differ because although in the good place there was no escape from hell, they were able to escape the houses they lived in and rooms. Unlike in No Exit, there was no escape, and Estelle, Inez, and Garcin were stuck in the room. A similarity between the two is, that they are both hell. In The Good Place when they all believed it was heaven not hell, Eleanor was trying to figure out why she didn’t belong in heaven. In No Exit, Inez was in denial of being in hell and wasn’t sure why she should be there.

The tone of No Exit is very different from the tone of The Good Place. In No Exit, each character goes into the room knowing that this is where they would be tortured for the rest of time. This greatly affects the tone of the play, with each character always being stressed, or angry. The tone is very depressing and stressful, and is a complete contrast from The Good Place. In The Good Place, we have no idea that the place that they were sent to was actually “the bad place”, just disguised to be “the good place”. Each character was relatively happy, which changed the feeling of the show.. This affected the tone of the entire show, because it was lighthearted and funny, compared to the stressful and sad tone of No Exit.

Thematic Ideas: S.B.

The larger scale statements in the good place are that humans inherently cannot be perfect during their time on Earth. On the other hand, in no exit the larger scale statement is that true misery comes from the human inability to control the nature of one's own existence. Also, in no exit the play proposes that “hell is other people” rather than a state created by God. In both no exit and the good place, it seems as though the decisions you have mde in your previous life before you passed determine where you end up. And in both the show and play, we find out what all of the characters did that made them end up in hell. In addition to this, Inez in No exit questions why she is there just like Eleanor in The Good Place. In the end, they come to the realization of why they ended up where they did. The impact our actions have on others is a reflection of who we are. When we grow up, we are always told to treat people with respect and how we want to be treated. As a result of this, how we act and treat people is a reflection of this because such as in the Good place and No Exit, it leads them to hell.

The central message of both No Exit and The Good Place was that ‘Hell’, or the situation you are in, is purely what you make of it. With No Exit, their level of torture depends solely on their willingness to interact and deal with the other people in the room. If every person in the room found ways to deal with each other, then they would no longer be tortured, and be able to survive peacefully. In The Good Place, each character was tortured at the beginning, but after some time, they all grew fond of each other, and ended up helping each other be better people. These messages are conveyed throughout the works quite effectively.
