The twitter chat I participated in was the #musedchat with many of my other music education peers! It is a chat dedicated to both choral, general, and instrumental music education. This specific chat day was focused on improvisation and composition in the music classroom.

Just to set up the chat, my personal knowledge on improvisation and composition in the music classroom is super limited to general music composition and improvisation. So, as I expressed, I was super excited to hopefully get some new information and resources.

I post this question because I think my fears are ones widely felt by students and teachers! But, beyond that, I had never considered what my definition of success in composition and improvisation is. Defining with students in the future could be a key point in helping students not fear composition and improvisation.

In this resource by the National Association of Music Educators, the author describes circle singing as a means of encouraging improvisation in a non-threatening and supportive manner. This method uses essentially layer ostinati to create harmonic and collaborative singing. During a possible faculty presentation at CSU's UCA, the presenter used circle singing as proof of concept that improvisation is suitable in the choral classroom. It was honestly the most enjoyable moment of musical expression I had been a part of in my academic career. The article highlights more research on circle singing, so check it out!
