Protocol During the Playing of the Star Spangled Banner

During the Star Spangled Banner it is very important to show respect to our flag, our country, our anthem, and all that they stand for. For this reason there are certain protocols for everyone to follow. The military officers and enlisted must stand at attention with a salute. Veterans and those not in uniform at the time also have to salute. People with hats must take their hat off with their right hand and place it at their left shoulder. All others must stand with their hand over their heart. With one exception, those who religion prevents them from celebrating the Star Spangled banner must stand out of respect. Last but definitely not least, everyone is required to be silent.
