Categorising & Diagnosing of Mental Disorders

In order to categorise a mental disorder, a widely used system is the DSM 5. DSM is short for ‘Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.’ This was first developed in 1952, by the American Psychiatric Association, and since then, there have been 5 different editions. The DSM alone however shouldn’t be used to diagnose, or categorise a mental disorder; this should instead be done by a trained professional.

Bipolar disorder is a disorder that is categorised into the box of mood disorders. Someone with bipolar will experience extreme fluctuation in mood. These fluctuations have been called the ‘depressive state’ and the ‘manic state.’ It is unknown how long these states can last for, however it can vary in length, from a week to longer for it to be categorised as bipolar.
