In this week's Padlet we will be reviewing Ratliff's book as a whole. In its entirety this was a extremely helpful resource. The depth it goes into on certain musical elements really helped me gain an understanding of ideas I hadn't been introduced to before. What I particularly liked was for every element presented there were always a multitude of examples connected with the idea. Another aspect I enjoyed, connecting on to the last, was the variety and diversity of the examples presented. Ratliff did a great job finding these elements across all genres of music. Another aspect of the book I found exemplary was its ability to be understood by the common reader. I didn't need to be a graduate student in music to follow along or understand the concepts of what was being discussed. One part I found to be problematic was the generic structure of the book. Though on average everything was explained well, some elements were a little more complex and I felt could use more explanation. The book as helped me listen to music as more of a complex and collective functioning piece rather than just a song.
