How Does Sunscreen Work?

.
oFirst off, let's start by defining Sunscreen. Basically, sunscreen is a protective solution you put on your skin which protects you from the Sun's UV rays. It can come in many forms like a cream or a spray.
Now how does it work? There are two different chemicals, and they both have different jobs.
Inorganic chemicals, like Zinc, work to reflect the UV rays. If you've ever worn a white shirt vs a black shirt in the sun, the white shirt will reflect the sunlight much better than the black shirt. This is the same for the inorganic chemicals in sunscreen, which is why it's white.
Organic chemicals, like oxybenzone, works to absorb UV rays through chemical bonds. Then the UV rays are broken down and released as heat.
Also, just a quick fact. If you've ever wondered what SPF meant, it's the Sun Protection Factor. The best kinds of sunscreens to use usually have a 30 spf or 50 spf. The larger the number, the stronger the sun protection is.
