Born on October 17, 1915, in Manhattan, Miller was raised in an upper-middle-class home with a sister who became an actor and a brother who went into business. His father manufactured women's coats while his mother taught school. In 1928, the family was forced to move to a small house in the Midwood section of Brooklyn. At school, Miller was more interested in sports than academics. He could not afford college tuition and his grades were not good enough to earn him a scholarship. He applied to the University of Michigan and Cornell University, but was turned down. Miller was faced with the difficult task of finding work in the worst economic times the nation had ever seen. He managed to find work at a warehouse to save money for college. Miller reapplied to the University of Michigan and was finally accepted. After changing his major to journalism, Miller began to write many successful plays and scripts such as The Story of G.I. Joe, All My Sons, and Death of a Salesman. Miller won a Theatre Guild National Prize in 1944. He also wrote his first novel Focus. In 1953, Miller first produced yet another of his most outstanding works, The Crucible. He also won the Pulitzer Prize, Drama Critics Circle Award, and Donaldson Award for his work. Miller was married in 1940 to Mary Grace Slattery, and they divorced in 1956. Miller then married the screen legend Marilyn Monroe the same year until 1961. After the divorce and death of Monroe, Miller later wrote a play, After the Fall, about his experiences with her. As Miller aged, his career seemed to pick up steam again and he won the Tony Award. Arthur Miller died on February 10, 2005 in Roxbury, Connecticut.

"Arthur Miller." Newsmakers, Gale, 1999. U.S. History in Context, link.galegroup.com/apps/doc/K1618002840/UHIC?u=stev76221&xid=b600ea4d.
