“I remember I was dreaming about a bee. A giant bumblebee. It was buzzing in my ear; it was going to sting me. I opened my eyes and sat up with a start, but the buzzing didn’t stop.” (p. 1)

the dreams context was that there were bombers coming towards Lisa and her family yet she had not known that at the time because she was asleep. The significance of this part of the story is that it sets up the mood and the danger that will unfold through- out the entire book, especially in the beginning where people don’t know what to do.

“I leap off, dragging my bag, run into the grass and trees beside the stop, and finish throwing up. Then I sink down by my sack. I’m weak, I’m shaking. I think I’m crying, and my mouth tastes terrible. I want to go home. How did I get myself into this? I think back to the streetcar. All those people – they saved me. Maybe they saved my life.” (p. 29)

The context for this is that Lisa had just started putting the envelopes of the real news onto the street cars, she just got on when two German soldiers took and came on and sar down in front of her. Lisa threw-up onto the soldiers and one looked into her bag and saw what she had she began to realize what had happened and some random people helped her off the street car and away from the Nazi’s. the significance of this is that it shows that there are people that are willing to take and help the carrier of the truthful news and help the innocent from the tyranny of the Nazi’s.

“She whispers to me, ‘That was for Mama and Papa. But it was only the first.’ She’s actually enjoying herself.

A chill runs down my spine. My God, I think, these Germans are dragging us all down to their level. How will we keep ourselves better than them?” (p.46)

the context of this is that Lisa and Susanne have just blown up one of the Nazi factories for their bombs. the other context is that the Nazi’s have blown uyp Susannes parents and their music hall a little while back. the significance is in the phrase where Lisa thinks “ My God, I think, these Germans are dragging us all down to their level” it shows us that the Nazi’s are willing to do anything to keep their superiority on the lands that it has invaded.

“ ‘No, Father, it can’t be!’ I cry. I’m not willing to accept what he’s getting at. What does it matter that we are Jewish? I don’t feel any different than anyone else, and I’m not treated differently. Now will I have to be only a Jew? Is being a Jew all that’s important about me? The very name Eichmann makes me feel sick to my stomach.” (p. 57)

I am not sure of the context of this quote because I cannot remember the chapter it was in. the significance oif this is it shows that the Nazi’s make the jew’s afraid of some people then put that person/people into the new areas that the nazi’s invade.

“ ‘I’m afraid there will be no service tonight at the synagogue,’ Father continues. ‘Rabbi Melchior told everyone at the early service that he’ll be closing the synagogue. He’s going on holiday.’

I almost laughed. The rabbi going on holiday on Rosh Hashanah?

Then it hits me.” (p.62)

The context for this is that all the jews are on a special holiday and the father of the synagogue wants all the jews to take a “vacation” for their own safety. the significance of this is that the jews are finally taking and realizing that they are in danger because of the things that have happened in the past few years.

What the author is suggesting is that we don’t actually know what the true meaning of us fighting the war is and we probably never will. Throughout history there have been many wars but there are not many that we know why and if we do we might not know who the war was between most of the times. He also says that war is useless because all people do is that they take and kill people that they don’t need to kill and that they could just be people that they could take a drink with. One last thing that he suggests is that wars are an excuse and excuse to take lives because they want a part of the world and that they want more land and that they want more people to rule and that is why wars are an excuse, pointless and all around just not worth it.

Give four reasons why Lisa’s fourteenth birthday is so memorable? (4)-getting to go with jesper -her father coming home early with bad news
-stefan and erik arguing
-going dancing at suzanne's dance hall
When Lisa tells Stefan and Erik about the hospital massacre, how does Erik react? Why does his reaction make Stefan so mad? (3) When Lisa tells Stefan and Erik about the hospital Erik reacts by telling Lisa that the nurses, the surgeons and the hospital staff shouldn’t have done what they did and that it was their fault. this reaction from Erik makes Stefan mad because it wasn’t the people at the surgery rooms fault it was the Nazi’s and Erik knew it.
What “surprise” is waiting at home for Lisa and Stefan when they get back from Lisa’s birthday celebration? (1) The surprise that is awaiting Lisa and Stefan after the Birthday celebration is the baby that Lisa’s father took and rescued from the dying mother after she was shot in the previous pages of the book.
What happens to Susanne in chapter seven? (2) in chapter seven Susanne and her family get blown up by the germans because they were playing music that the Nazi’ didn’t like that much although that is what they thought in the book I think that it was because the Nazi’s thought that there alot of Jew’s in there so they blew it up.In chapter eight, what was Susanne’s motivation for helping with the resistance bombing? (1)
Susanne's motivation to take and help the resistance in the bombings is that she wanted revenge/justice for her parents who were killed in the bombing of her home/their dance hall a little while back now. After they set the factory bomb, Lisa says the following:“A chill runs down my spine. My God, I think, these Germans are dragging us all down to their level. How will we keep ourselves better than them?” (p. 46)In your own words tell what does Lisa mean by this and what is she concerned about? (4)I think that what Lisa means by saying this is that the Nazi’s are taking and making the Jew’s and the people in the places that they took over and putting them to their level in saying that they are trying to take and scare them into obedience. what she is concerned about is that she doesn’t know how she will take and keep them above them so that they know that they are in charge and that they are still the people of denmark and not of German Nazi rule.
