1) Building Personal Relationships with Students and Families: In order for improvement to occur, families and students must trust you and the school as it goes through the changes and revisions that must occur. Working hard to build these relationships will give you the power to ask families and students to go above and beyond with the trust that you know what you are doing.
2) Collaboration: There is so much work that goes into truly unpacking and understanding the standards and curriculum to teach the content. Through strong conversations and work together we can get to the root of what needs to be taught to our kiddos in an effective way.
3) Use of Classroom Results: We have so much data, but are we using it effectively to make change? Teachers and schools need to think about how they are going to take data to move forward rather than something that was being done to students.

A toxic environment doesn't develop overnight and cannot be changed overnight either. A plan of change is needed, and some difficult decisions will likely be necessary; however, creating a positive environment is worthwhile as the impact on student learning is huge.

I think that it's really important for schools to collect information from surveys from students, staff, and families. This information allows schools to know what they are doing well as well as what they need to improve upon from the direct people that their practices affect. Through this practice, schools build relationships with these stakeholders by taking their information and making steps to include it in the school improvement plan.

I actually shared the video of the data carousel with my principal. The video showed teachers coming together support the needs of all of their students. Sure, the data wasn't all theirs but the human bodies are. The value that they put on the students and bettering the people at whatever cost shines through. Because of this, I would want to use data carousels to work together with my school to improve all students. No matter grade, subject, or teacher.

Teachers should collect the type of data that would best push them towards their goals. Additionally, there should be a triangulation of data from different sources to ensure that the whole picture is being properly analyzed.

I think sometimes that teachers get caught up in the wide array of data that is assessable to them. By keeping a highly focused lens on data that matches their goals allows teachers to gage whether they are making steps towards their goals. Triangulation of data is also very important as it gives teachers a full picture of student achievement. Gathering data from many sources allows teachers to not glaze over student misconceptions accidentally.

By creating SMART goals for the School Improvement Plan, all readers of the SIP can know what the priorities of the school are, how they will be accomplished and by when they will be accomplished. Through this process, the SIP is clear and accessible to all stakeholders. We want the SIP to be a document for all people involved and not just a secret document for the writers.
