They have two kids (4 & 7) and are going through a custody battle. Her ex currently has full legal custody due to client's drinking (severe trigger).
- Both of the client's parents are supportive and are very involved in her and her kids' lives. Her dad maintains close contact with her [ex-]husband, as he does not want contact with her.

- Person-Centered
- Strength-Based
- Solution-Focused
Following step-down from residential treatment, client says frequently that she is finally serious about her sobriety and ready to fully participate in treatment. While the client does self-identify as an alcoholic and acknowledges her addiction, she is pre-contemplative: she does not take responsibility for her behavior; client believes that she has unrealistic control over what other people do; she has trouble acknowledging why most people in her life do not trust her.

- Distractions! Supervisor called me in the middle of the session and there were staff members walking by the room/talking.
- Went into this session with some guilt and lack of structure/preparation, as this was not the client I was initially supposed to see.
- I really like the client and felt empathetic toward her for feeling like her family was against her; however, I probably should have challenged the client's all-or-nothing thinking. I was rooting for her (obviously) to stay sober.

She seems to be looking for validation about her resentment toward her family. I used verbal and non-verbal active listening skills, reflections, and open-ended questions to achieve this and help get her talking.
Though, I realize that I reflected back a lot of the situations she describes as "triggers," but not on the fact that they are triggers and what to do about it.

- Client talks a lot about her triggers--CBT or DBT might be helpful for her. She should eventually be able to identify triggers for relapse and apply healthy coping strategies.
- Motivational Interviewing: getting the client moving through stages of change.
- Client will ideally feel validated, but also be willing to take responsibility for problematic drinking and behaviors associated with her substance use. Also working with client to find ways to compromise with her family and be patient in gaining back trust that has been lost (breathalyzer, completing treatment, AA).
