(1) Based on this feedback, what seems to be the dilemma here?

(2) Based on this feedback, what are students telling us?

(3)What are our next steps as an equity team to respond to this dilemma?

1. The dilemma here is students aren't having the space/ time to talk about events that are troubling them or feel like should be discussed. Another part of the dilemma is there isn't enough time in the day to have the opportunity to speak about hard topics. It also sounds like there could be a lack of know-how in order to have these conversation in the classroom. Also the dilemma seems to be coming from teachers reacting to an event instead of incorporating a dedicated space to talk about hard topics.

2. Students are telling us they are not being heard and feel like the classroom lacks opportunity to have student lead discussions.
3. Next steps would be to have more dedicated time for class discussions and the flexibility in scheduling. Also having a dedicated space/time to talk about equity issues and it be part of the routine rather than a discussion to seem like a reactionary solution.

2) Students are telling us to give them time and a safe space to discuss their concerns. They want to be part of the conversation. They hear different opinions at home and would like to have a space to discuss what they hear and share others thoughts as well.
3) We should provide dedicated time and space to hear all voices. We teach students to disagree respectfully. Yet we don't trust that they can do it so we shy away. We need to provide a safe space where students can say their opinions, share their fears and find solace that all is well or will be.
